Congratulations Katy! I'm glad it worked great for you. I too am hatching like this from now on. I am in Spain right now on vacation and actually miscalculated my hatch. My son is at home and is going through his first hatch by himself. He is using the egg carton method and hopefully he'll get a...
Sure, I think any type carton will work.
As for the eggs getting cold, keep in mind the hens get off the eggs every day. My broody got off the eggs for about 10 minutes once a day. So you should be fine.
How do you move the eggs without cooling down the incubator and cooling off the eggs too much?
I take my time and am not worried about them cooling off. I pull the turner full of eggs out and set it on a chair. Then I put the cartons in and one by one I candle the egg looking for...
Oh man... now I am nervous!!!!
Good Luck MBLayfield and countrygirlcleelum! I sure hope they all pop out healthy! Keep us posted.
Christina - I can't wait to see how many giants hatch!
That's great news Katy! Congratulations on your results so far.
This community is so great. I loaded my bator again and thought I would have to wait 21 days to see if the egg carton method really worked. Now you and mergmet have both tried it already and are getting good results. Now I am...
Are those your own sexlink creations? And did you have them in the carton through the whole incubation period?
No, on day 19 I stopped turning and moved them from the turner to the egg cartons. These are a mixed breed. I have two top hat roosters that appear to be mixed. The hens top hat hens...
Final Results: 34 healthy chicks out of the 36 eggs that made it to hatch! That is an incredible 94.4% hatch rate!
Here is a picture of how I put the cartons and what they looked like after the hatch. I removed some of the shells but pretty much this is how it looks. Much easier to clean the...
What kind of incubator are you using?
It's a Hova Bator with turner and fan
So are you removing them soon after they hatch....do they just kind of "fall out" of the carton?
After these last three eggs are finished I will open up the bator and take a picture of how it was. Every one of the...
I plan to document everything real good and post it on my website. However, keep in mind that one good result doesn't make it automatically the way to go. Luck could be involved as well.......
I feel real good about the process since I actually intended to do something to increase my hatch rate...
OMG! I got home from work and out of the 36 eggs in the incubator I have 33 chicks!!!!!!
There are three eggs left and one has pipped and I think I hear chirping in another. This is by far the best hatch I have ever achieved. I am convinced that my theory as to why my eggs were dying after day...
This is going to be the best hatch rate yet! I woke up at 3 am and decided to check the eggs. Two more had hatched so I moved them to the brooder. I got up at 530 and looked in the bator and saw 8 chicks! Pip to zip to hatch in less than 2 hours.
So far, 21 chicks and a bunch more pips!
I know...I can't believe I messed it up by two days. However, I have to tell you my results are MUCH better. These things are popping out like popcorn!
I'm hatching these trying to learn more about hatching. Something between day 18 and 21 is ruining my hatch.
With this one I put a control...
Now there are 5 chicks and I can see 13 pips. This may be my best hatch yet.
I have been getting my eggs to day 18 and then for some reason a lot of the chicks don't hatch. It seems as if the first 4 or 5 to hatch make it but the others never even pip. So after analyzing and researching the web...
