Where do you get your baby chicks?

I have no clue<shrugs> I've had a few lt brahmas and a few dk brahma mixes, they were all pretty assertive, tho not destructively so. My first cockbird was a dk brahma mix he was really mellow. ETA:for clarification, the brahmas were assertive with the birds, but sweethearts to me. They hated...

Where do you get your baby chicks?

That's odd for Black Sex Link. I've only had one hybrid mix layer, she was a great bird and laid like gangbusters then died at 2-3, but she and the Wellie produced one of my best OE hens now.

Where do you get your baby chicks?

I don't really have a favorite breed, they are all individuals, and most mine have been crosses. The only pure breed I've had that I really liked was my Welsummer cock, he had a great demeanor. I loved the Light Brahma for their looks, but they can be bossy in the flock and the feed to egg ratio...

Where do you get your baby chicks?

I've had a mix....started with adult brahma, cochin, wyandotte mixes. Then EE and welsummer. Now have SLW, EE, OE, marans, legbar. All hatchery birds will be gone this fall to focus on marans cock over OE and legbar pullets/hens and their offspring.

Where do you get your baby chicks?

Good, thanks, most folks don't want to hear anything negative, even if it true. I am extremely pragmatic, bluntly honest, and not very diplomatic. Do you have a good way to integrate new chicks?

Where do you get your baby chicks?

One of the hardest learning curves with keeping chickens is that they can die. It's not like a dog or cat where you can take it to the vet, and they are just not as long lived. They have been domesticated as livestock(food) not as pets. It's one of the biggest bones I have with the whole...

Where do you get your baby chicks?

So you didn't buy direct from a hatchery. The second one was a private citizen buying day old chicks from hatcheries then reselling to the public? I'd avoid that one, who knows what they have floating around in their 'facilities'. Mareks is a virus ;) Vaccination does not protect them from all...

Where do you get your baby chicks?

I mostly hatch my own too. But I have the space for grow out and the ability to slaughter all those males. But your situation is difficult, as it is for many small flock backyarders, because you only want a very specific few chicks. Gonna be hard to find that without using a hatchery and even...
