    The Olive-Egger thread!

Keep in mind the shell(blue or white) and coating(brown) genes are separate strings.

    The Olive-Egger thread!

Probably, you'll know by 6 months. It's hard to get good pics. The top pic, GLW body with CLB head, cool looking bird!!

Got pics of the birds? Might have to stalk them, or segregate them, to see eggs.

Only certain crosses make sexlinked chicks, I don't know that much about it. But do know the BCM is 'solid' and the CLB are 'barred' and it's quite apparent once chicks dry which is which gender. White spot on head are males.....and the females have darker beaks, legs, combs. If EE laid blue...

    The Olive-Egger thread!

Pretty much, yeah. I first tried to make OE's by crossing a Welsummer cock over blue laying EE hens. Got some olives, some nice dark green(olive), and some browns. Because those blue laying EE's didn't carry 2 blue shell genes. When I used a BCM cock over Cream Legbar hens they were all...

What cross do have? EE can lay blue, green, brown, pink. OE should lay olive, tho 'olive' is rather subjective. There's no color chart like for pure breed Ameraucana and Marans.

This is true...still hard to say until you see her egg if it'll be olive or just green.

That's pretty extreme, but I've seen it happen. Nip it in the bud.

    The Olive-Egger thread!

Can happen with any breed. Not sure what you mean by 'attack'....but.... Have had this happen several times, mostly with hand fed chicks often as they come of age and get spunky. It's pretty easily curbed with calm and deliberate determination. I peck them back, on the head or anywhere I can...

    The Olive-Egger thread!

Pretty hard to tell with a chick, might know more once it gets its adult feathers. Where did you get it? Hatchery should be able to tell you parentage.

    The Olive-Egger thread!

No way to tell until she lays. Lots of different breeds are used to 'make' OE's.

She...comb would be much redder by now if male. Noise you hear may be the 'honking' stage between peeps and clucks. Voice change.

Call farm store ask them where the chicks came from, then go to hatchery website and take a look. Sure looks like it, pretty early tho, my CLB crosses didn't show crests until head feathers came in.

    The Olive-Egger thread!

She's a she, but no telling if she's an OE without knowing her parentage...or waiting until she lays.

What's the cross? From your own flock?

    The Olive-Egger thread!

If you know which hatchery they buy from, you might be able to find out what breeds they make OE's from. Tho it's pretty popular now so who knows<shrugs> Looks like chick has a single comb, color and size will tell the tale if it's a male at about 4-6 weeks.
