The Olive-Egger thread!

Here is my OE chick. What birds do you think her parents are?

My OE should be laying soon, she's doing the squat when I pet her back.... However, she has a mean streak that is much like a RIR... She attacks my boyfriend when he feeds them in the morning and she attacked me for the first time when I picked up her flock friend CLB. Is human aggression typical for OE's ?? Any experience with behavior is appreciated. THANKS

Can happen with any breed.
Not sure what you mean by 'attack'....but....

Have had this happen several times, mostly with hand fed chicks often as they come of age and get spunky. It's pretty easily curbed with calm and deliberate determination.

I peck them back, on the head or anywhere I can reach, with the tips of thumb and first 2 fingers, as hard and fast as many times as I can before they get away. Well, not hard enough to hurt them, just startle them and let them you mean business. That's what another chicken would do, so they understand that kind of communication.

If that doesn't work after a couple applications, I hold them down to the ground with my hand on their back until they submit....again firmly enough to get the job done but not hurt them....add a few finger pecks and/or tug on the feathers on the back of their neck.

Oh those are great "techniques," I will definitely do the pack leader thing, thanks! Sorry "attack," was indeed vague... I know she's a she, but what she does is very rooster like - jump up and scratch your leg as if she had spurs.... Ouch. She's pretty bi-polar because she can also be sweet. Thanks again!

Hi out there on the olive egger thread! I was wondering if anyone has seen a production red/ameraucana(not EE) cross as an olive egger? I have the opportunity to buy one, though I understand Marans and Welsommers are usually used for the brown egg layer parent.
Though I have seen some production reds with darker brown eggs (though not as dark as the other two mentioned). Thanks:)

This is true...still hard to say until you see her egg if it'll be olive or just green.
