I wish I had a good place to start seeds over the winter. I sectioned off a corner of covered/screened porch type area I have with clear plastic to put some things to protect over the winter. It kept the frost out, but not the freezing temps. All my smaller aloes, the dragonfruit plants I'd...

So who's getting started on their Spring plantings? The stores all seem to have the cold weather stuff right now so I got some lettuce and broccoli, and a strawberry. And thought I'd try blackberry and raspberry again this year after my complete failure in the past. I also got some...

All the caterpillars were on things that the chickens would want to eat, like pea and bean plants. And the cucumber beetles were on everything!! I made some traps that were fairly effective on those. But it's hard to keep up on picking the caterpillars off the plants to throw to the chickens...

Man... I wish mine were doing so well. The caterpillers and cucumber beetles decimated everything this year. All I have left that are still "trying" are the rattlesnake beans, the striped zuchinni, and one vine tomato that started so late it still only has green fruit on it. Plus the...

If you want to plant bushes, you might want to find a way to dig down a little deeper for better roots. Even if you have to rent one of those gas powered post hole diggers. I'll bet it would help alot.

Publice Service Announcement! I just found hatchling squash bugs on my Key Lime bush! Wish I had taken pictures before I killed them, because I never would have believed it had i not seen it with my own eyes. There was a row of eggs on a young stem and all the hatchlings were on the tender...

My brother had a little blue speckly bantam last year that would draw blood. His wife was scared of her. I tossed her out of the coop and she'd run right back in, so one day I carried her all the way across the yard and on the way back she finally forgot about brooding and stayed outside all...

I've taken to covering certain things with a small bird cage. I have a couple (finch sized) laying about. Works just as good to keep birds out as it does to keep birds in! I have one over a baby Tree of Heaven in the chicken pen right now that I want to grow into a shade tree for them.

My brother has some rows of grapes that he values quite a bit because he make wine every year, and he drapes bird netting over them as soon as the fruit is about half grown. For the most part it keeps most wild critters off, including squirrels, with the exception of chickens that have learned...

Actually most perennial herbs like rosemary, oregano, thyme, mints/lemon balm, and lemon grass, etc.. if you can keep the roots from drying out will most definitely survive the summer. The aromatic woody herbs are designed by nature to be hardcore.

This is great! I grew up in Seattle, where everything grows like crazy, so figuring out how to grow a garden with success here is a bit of a mystery to me. And then we went on the road in a semi truck for a few years so I wasn't home to practice and learn. We have crab grass and a few...
