unfortunately, here in Arizona I don't have the option of forcing them to forage. There's only enough worth foraging for during short periods of growth in late winter when it's been a wet year, and later summer/monsoon season. So when I want to up protein intake my most reasonably priced way...
This isn't the first time I've seen bad reviews on that place. Their customer service history seems spotty.
There's another place called Bresse Farm (not Farms) located in Florida that has a much better reputation. Maybe try them?
That's the profile I was pm'ing with just a couple months ago... Not sure, maybe he got banned for selling animals on fb, since they're cracking down on that.... Too bad.
There's a guy in the fb Bresse group that has an awesome reputation for breeding a large healthy line. Keith Loeffler . Keith has the first line that GFF imported then lost most of due to a flood or hurricane or something years ago. There's also a place in Florida, Bresse Farm (not to be...
Hmmm I dunno. That comb sure is sticking out alot for a pullet. Here's a pic of a cockerel and photo bombing pullet at about 6 weeks, from some I hatched out last year. You can tell the pullets comb is still quite tight to the head. (yes the cockerel had very pale legs, he was definitely...
The only surefire way to know would be to breed the lame birds and see if they throw more like themselves. They'd want to hatch out a good 20 eggs. If none of the offspring get it, then it's diet.
Often those types of problems are nutritional, like the hen laying the egg was either lacking in certain things or not digesting properly. It can happen to anyone, but if GFF was feeding something that was lacking in something, it can do it. Not necessarily genetic.
Got my Bresse/NN pen put together the other day, in the same pen that I had the pure Bresse in last year. Probably a bit early, the roo is only 5 months old, but I like his temperment and he's the largest Bresse/NN that I have currently. At about 3 months he was pretty meaty, but is going...
That's one of the better reports I've heard. There's a convo about them going on in the fb Bresse group. People with sickly chicks that break legs and die in just the first few weeks. People that swear never to buy from them again. Please keep up updated on how they do.
White Cornish are really hard to find. Breeders sell hatching eggs for almost outlandish prices. (We're talking $10-40 each egg with no refund if the USPS scrambles them!) I've done alot of research on those and have pretty much given up unless I can run across someone local so I don't have to...
What's important to you for your flock is what is most important. You're the one that has to raise and feed them. They are certainly a niche breed. Personally, I have found that they really aren't any meatier than some of my naked necks, but I like their personalities, growth rates, and the...
Yes! Orloffs were another breed I was seriously considering... Such a beautiful bird! But after I saw some in person, they just looked like extra pretty EE's. The ones I saw were tiny compared to the NN's I'm raising.
That's one of the main symptoms of the "downfall" of the Naked Neck, is...
Did the Marans you have come that big from GFF, or did you have to improve on what you got? I get so frustrated, because I really want big Marans like that to work with, but I ask around from breeder to breeder and all I get is: "I don't eat my birds, I dunno, they feel big when I pick them...
I can't love this post more. I've started working on a long term project of bringing back the old Naked Neck. I've chatted with many long time keepers that say decades ago the NN used to be a huge meat bird. They recall growing up with lines so heavy even the hens reached 10+ lbs...
Well, I guess I put my foot in my mouth, because I now have a Bresse hen gone broody. I don't mind so much, but I suspect she's stealing eggs to add to her collection. I've been seeing the other girls in the other usual laying nests but the eggs are missing when I go to collect.. hmmm.. . so...
