Those eggs look awesome, well, the birds they came from do!
That first one is one of the naked necks... their necks are just so short right now ; )
That is interesting about the Condor eggs...I have seen photos of the awkward little things. With some of my ducklings that are backwards in...
Not offended I was just clarifying my reasoning. If you have a different experience that works for you I am very open to hearing that. I do try to speak from my experience and think others can have their experiences so I didn't intend to come off like a know it all. I guess I have come to...
When assisting, if their beak is not at the air cell, I do try to get air to them, but in my experience, they need to get used to breathing air for some time before they can come out of the shell at all or it is just too much a shock to their system. The thing about a chick having its beak...
Nice birds! The naked necks are ugly in an adorable sort of way. I really wanted a showgirl hen so hopefully I will get a couple. I do think the showgirl roosters get a little freaky looking... no offense intended to Flo ; ) I have one who has some lighter highlights and a huge vaulted...
I hatched a few this Summer but they have very light spots so far. I wonder how they will feather out... I saw some eggs for paint showgirls, that is very tempting for me ; )
I think you did all that you could, I don't think that chick could have been saved. Fishing around for the head will kill them pretty quickly. Just a total bummer!
I am excited for your new eggs though. I think porcelain is so pretty. Splash and Partridge are cool too. One of my lighter...
Thanks, they are all doing well today. No one is really upright for long though so it is hard to see the naked necks : ) I don't know if I should hatch more eggs... I am at maximum capacity!! I ran out of brooder space so I had to get creative and move some birds around today. My 2 week old...
More eggs.. yay... that is happy news!
I have hatched a lot of seramas and they notoriously need help hatching so I have gotten quite good at it. I think the key is to not open much of the shell, just the air cell and if they can breathe then they might make it but opening the shell too...
I read that Silkies were at some point crossed with Polish chickens for their vaulted skull. I have never hatched Polish chicks so I don't know what they look like.
A few of them had not internally pipped and were not going to be able to, the membrane was shrink wrapped over then, Their beaks were right under the membrane though so I just made a little opening. One started gasping for air, poor thing. I know assisting is controversial, but I just...
10 chicks are still in the running. 3 out of the shell and 7 mostly still in. When I found the first 5 eggs already gone, I started assisting. I may have helped some unnecessarily but I probably would have lost the rest if I didn't. One of the 10 is badly malpositioned, but the rest are...
I have good news and bad news...
I had a bad feeling so I checked the eggs and most of my small eggs were already dead : ( I thought their air cells were big enough, but apparently not. 3 of them had internally pipped and died and one was very mal-positioned. The other 2 small eggs I...
I woke up to.... nothing... so I played some chick music and next time I looked #8 has pipped! Your posts made me realize that day 21 doesn't actually start for a few hours, I think I set mine about 2 or 3 pm. I am dying to know what the other eggs are doing but I am being good so far. I...
