Thanks for the advice, Draig. I have left a message for someone local, in Coventry, RI, who sells day old chicks for $5. The posted on Craigslist. The ad also says that if you get a rooster they will take it back and replace it with another chick. Sounds like a win-win to me.

My chick hatched....then died. I have no other activity going on. Now we have a choice to make. Start over, or buy some day old chicks. Very disappointing.

Things are not going all that well for me either. Of the 3 that pipped, only one is making any progress. We still have 6 other eggs that have not pipped. I candled them last night and they look like they are full. There are no air sacs left, so maybe yes, maybe no. Here is the little one...

Thank you VERY much for that information. Since I posted, I have one that is unzipping. The other two are still taking their time. I expect to have at least one little chirper all the way out by the time I get home from work tonight.

It's Time!!! Today is day 21. I went to work this morning... and nothing. I just got home from work and 3 of the 10 eggs in the incubator have little holes, about an 1/8 of an inch across, and I can hear an occasional chirp!!!! How long does the hatching process usually take to complete...

Went into lockdown today. Now we wait...

Candled our 11 remaining eggs last night (Day 14). Before we started we were prepared to throw out all but 4 because previous candlings didn't show much change. But last night all but one showed improvement. We opened the one egg and, sure enough, it was just a blood spot. The 10 remaining...

We set 12 eggs in the incubator on July 4th. They were given to us by a nice woman who has a nearby farm. We don't know what kind they are, they are mixed white and brown eggs. We candled them last night and believe that approximately 8 are viable.
