    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

In my experiment, I found that the CX that ate the 50/50 fermented crumble/whole grain mix had the lowest weights followed by the dry crumble, but the CX fed 100% fermented crumble were the heaviest. It all came down to ease of digestability

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I processed my ff and regular birds at the same time and we had an assembly line going so I didn't have time to notice a difference. I'm taking an animal nutrition class at Michigan State this semester and we start a broiler project tomorrow mixing our own feeds so this should be a fun...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

My pullets are 24 weeks old and have been on ff since 12 weeks. They started laying in the beginning of August and now I'm getting 10 eggs per day out of 14 pullets. Most eggs are in the mid/upper 40g range but I get 5 or so 70+g eggs per week and the shells are HARD! At least twice as hard...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Rolled steamed oats are good, they didn't like whole oats; milo and wheat are in the scratch I get and they went over well too.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I haven't fermented in winter yet but I plan on moving my buckets to the back heated porch and feeding smaller amounts and maybe supplementing with dry feed.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Started fermenting layer mash on Tuesday and boy am I happy with it. It stirs well, ferments rapidly, and drains sooooo much better than the starter or meatbird feed. My fourteen 21 week olds are up to 7 eggs a day and I know for sure that two of them have laid an egg a day for two weeks...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I took my CX to 10 weeks. The smallest was 6.05lb before and 3.48 after processing and that is minus the skin and neck. The largest was 9.54lb before and 6.54 after. We processed 19 so we decided to skin them all to save time. I'm still working on my numbers (was out of town for a dogs show)...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I've been fermenting milo for about a month and they love it. I don't get it separate, it's a main ingredient in scratch from my local mill.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I fermented scratch grains with my crumbles and I also used yeast when I ran out of ACV. The only drawback with yeast is it makes the mix thick like bread dough and harder to stir but it ferments well.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Thanks! We ate him on Thrusday (processed him last Sunday). He was great that day but after that, he wouldn't leave Red alone and then chased all the hens nonstop. It got to the point where they were't eating half as much as before. We got the first egg on 7/22, then he became a hormonal...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

The only time mine smell is in the run after a really long rain and it's a really sweet/icky smell instead of nasty chicken poo. The coop never smells!

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Mine disliked the whole oats but would eat the cracked corn but when I ran out of the oats, they wouldn't eat all the cracked corn. They were hungry but they would refuse to eat it even if I let them go all day and night with just that in the trough, it would still be there the next day. For...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Can't stir it too much. Mine becomes a thin, slurry consistency but it strains just fine. I use a mylon mesh strainer like this

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I keep mine covered with water so that I have some liquid left over for the next batch. While it's nice to not have to strain it, I feel keeping it submerged and stirring it a few times a day helps give a more uniform fermentation than one big, sticky glop plus you don't have to keep adding...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Got our first ff egg today!!!!! My girls have been on ff since 8 weeks old and they're 19 weeks old now. I give then 50/50 crumbles/grains. It was 52 grams and perfect! The thing I thought was strange is our cockerel the same age followed her into the coop and settled into the nestbox one...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I used a wide 1' piece of osb/plywood to keep the woodchips out. When they were young I covered it in papertowel but as they got older they started to eat it so then I just kept washing it off to try to keep it somewhat clean. Then by 3 weeks I upgraded it to a meatie bird picnic table like...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Actually, medicated feed ferments very well; I used it for my meaties for weeks without problems.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I do the same thing, the new wet layer will moisten the older ff. Eventually they'll surprise you and the feeder will be empty . Even my 6 week old meaties go through cycles of eating 3+ lbs a day then they won't even make it through 3lbs the next. It's all trial and error and being...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Just ate my two FF 18 week old barred rock cockerels and they were the best chicken I've ever had!!!! I have 2.5 more weeks on my CX experiment and can't wait to taste them too. Unfortunately, my digital kitchen scale was maxed out this week so no results until I can find an accurate scale to...
