    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

Lavender is a recessive gene that requires two copies to be present for it to express. If the father is carrying a lavender gene, he will pass it to some of his chicks, but there will be no way of knowing which chicks have the gene and which chicks don't. If you really want to know which ones...

To help minimize pasty butt, make sure they aren't too warm or too cool. And keep things calm and quiet around them. It's usually caused by some sort of stress. I find keeping them in a dimly lighted room helps keep them more calm.

It can take up to 24 hours from pipping to hatch.

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

It's all very new to her. Give her some time. A peck or two out of curiosity isn't something you need to be worried about. A hen will use her beak to tuck that baby back up under her, and it can look a little rough. The chick doesn't need food or water for another couple days. If the hen doesn't...

There's no reason why you can't feed him medicated feed, but just know, it only helps to protect against coccidia. It's not a vaccine or antibiotic. If you choose not to feed medicated, then be sure to have something like Corid on hand to treat him.

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

It can take anywhere from 2 hours to over 24 hours to hatch after pipping. It's hard work to break through that shell, and a chick needs to rest before attempting to zip. The blood vessels don't begin to recede until after that first pip, and the yolk needs to finish absorbing. All of that takes...

If you use a spray bottle to boost humidity, how are you going to avoid getting the eggs wet?

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

My weak chick that needed help hatching, passed last night. She fought for a full week. I knew the poor little thing didn't have much of a chance, something about her was just 'off.' I only got one healthy, live female chick (they were black sexlinks) from my broody hatch. I'm very tempted to...

Are you absolutely certain that all of the eggs under her were from a Barred Rock to Barred Rock pairing? Could another hen's eggs have gotten added to her clutch? Do you have more than one rooster?

Just to update, last month's chicks are already outside. They are huge, and they aren't even 4 weeks old yet.

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

So the weak chick that needed assistance hatching is still alive, and is a bit stronger. I had to pull the remaining chick from momma hen. She just wasn't doing a good job of protecting the chicks from the rest of the flock. She accidentally stomped a few chicks while charging another hen. I...

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

We lost one of the broody hen's chicks tonight. For a first time momma, I guess 5 chicks were too many for her to keep track of. One died, mostly likely from getting chilled while exploring the run. I sold three today, so she now only has a single chick to look after. The chick that couldn't...

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

She's got plenty of energy, she just can't use her feet at all. I think it's the reason she couldn't zip properly. She can kick her legs, but the toes don't move. I can make her stand properly with support. But when she's picked up, her feet just kind of dangle. I think it's a neurological problem.

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

The chick that needed assistance has splayed legs. I think it's why she had such a hard time hatching. She doesn't use her feet at all. She can move her legs, but she can't use her feet to grip, even on a paper towel. I've splinted the legs, but I don't have much hope for this chick making it.

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

Six are now hatched. 4 black sexlink cockerels, and 2 pullets. One chick did not survive hatching. One chick needed assistance after trying to zip for over 4 hours. She's exhausted, but is getting stronger. I've got her in the incubator with the 4 eggs that need a bit more time before hatching...

Momma and chicks. She's got 4 fully hatched, and 6 more eggs to go. Daddy and some of the biological mommas, wondering what all the peeping is about.

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

I've got three healthy little chicks hatched. One chick was partially hatched but not alive. It looks like it might have been squished. 4 more are pipped. And three that haven't.
