I didn't have a problem with ants. I put food and water inside the coop for about the first week. Mine figured out going down the ramp pretty quick but where mom jumped half way up the ramp they couldn't figure out how to get back up till about 7-10 days old.
They figured it out the night before I went camping and did great after that. Mama started roosting again this week and babies went to nest box so I put them up with her for a couple days now they jump up there with her. They are all doing great. Babies will go to a new home in 2 weeks.
Chicks have been doing great and go in with mom most times. There are times she goes in and they don't want to follow so stay out, then I see her pop right back out. haahaa! But so glad they figured it out and did AMAZING while I was camping!
And I now have 2 other broody hens!!! UGH...
Once on the roost he would be fine I think.
When I had the person checking on them come into the run, I went in first and picked him up then had her come in and I put him down. He seemed ok with her in there then. So hopefully now that he has seen her in with me he won't be a jerk. I told...
my girls will be leaving here to head to the campground a couple hours before dusk, but mama normally heads in around the time that they would leave. I may have my older one take a peek (or I can look on the camera and if I notice it out message her) and put it in if it is out.
an dnot that it...
so twice this morning mama went back in the run and babies didn't follow. So I set up the playyard before I had to go to work and put them in it in the coop with food and water so I could see how it went before I went camping and how much food and water was eaten. Seemed to go well then about...
one of the times mama went to go up the baby was on the ramp with her then baby jumped off as mama went to go in!! UGH! Then I went out to work on getting them up the ramp and she came out so I put one of the babies on the ramp and it ran right up to her. I think they just don't completely...
if you read up above I did say I guessed I was going to have to put the playyard in the coop and hoped that worked to keep her and the babies in.... so I did try to think of something that would work. but I have to work, pick my daughter up from school, shop for camping, pick my daughter up...
There is no room in our camper for a kennel big enough for her and the chicks. And with my Rottie in the camper as well it is not safe.
I have a brooder already built in the coop but I have 12 4 week old chicks in there. I have 3 nipple waterers but 2 are in with the other chicks. I have 2...
Some pictures of my run, coop (you can see the brooder under the poop boards and one of the month old chicks), and mama sitting with babies under her. The gray thing in the run is the play yard. It is up on wood so all the babies can use it to get away from the big ones.
I may have to try to set up the play yard to lock them in the coop but not sure I have something that will fit in the play yard that will hold enough water. I use 5 gal buckets in my run and have a 1 liter nipple waterer for the chicks. She has gone in twice today without them. I have taken...
I don't have a dog crate anymore since my dog uses it. I may be able to use the baby play yard in the coop but mama may be able to jump up to the top and babies may be able to fit in the spacing. The one time I tried to block the chicken door so the other full size ones couldn't get in for a...
We are camping so no. We will be in a camper at a campground with 4-5 people and my 100 lb Rottie puppy. No space for a chicken. And my only family close is camping with us
I have had her in the coop with the flock the whole time and the chicks with them since they hatched (well 1 since about 19 hrs old and 1 since day 1. I had blocked off the chicken door in the coop ONCE when she first had the babies outof the nest and she FREAKED OUT. SCREAMING because it was...
so the chicks are 6 days old as of tonight. 1 hatched under mama, 1 in an incubator the same night and I gave it to her the next day. she has been a great mom (they hatched last Tue night). She took them around the coop the first couple days here and there, calls them to eat and drops food...
