mine have straw, i put pdz in the bottom and in the coop floor. they did for a while make their own straw nests on the other wall of the coop even with fake eggs in the nest boxes, now they like to use the 2 corner nest boxes.
first time I got 2 eggs in one day and today they laid it in the nest box with the fake eggs, I've seen 3 of the hens working those fake eggs, so I still don't know who's it is.
Mine, 7 now, free range some in a large protected yard, the feed is vegetarian, I'm using less than a 50pound bag a month. They get some snacks, kitchen veggie scraps, and love a handfull or 2 of sweet horse feed, a 14% hi fat, mix grain.
I've got one Rock and one NH red with pretty good combs and wattles, that are really red, one of the just arrived Easter Eggers, with the pea comb is the one that is squatting, she's only been here 4 days, I was told they turned 18 weeks old last Thursday. I haven't bought any eggs in a while...
Wonderful with to help me figure things out, the floor of the coop I've put PDZ down with just a little straw over it. We are in central Oklahoma and have been in drought for 3 years so this last week of rain on and off has been very appreciated.
If I just build up the inner walls of those...
The new girls have been staying away from the old girls by hanging out upstairs, It's already getting around 90 degrees so I'm propping open the nest box door, this was not intended as a roost but they hang out there for a little bit at a time, butts over the 2 center nest boxes, One of the new...
Thank you for your help, I'll see what I can do about the nest thing, more looking for a way the new girls can know they are 'special places' and not just everyday sit and poop places. Was kind of 'worried' about the straw thing, unfortunate since I have lots of straw. I do have some shredded...
OK, another kind of newby question, how hi should the sides of a nest box be, can they be made of 2x4s? I'm still wondering if they don't like the straw in the coop. when I put it on the ground floor they seem to love it, play in it and make little 'nests' but the older hens won't even walk on...
Thank you all for the ideas, for now the younger ones get upstairs during the day, I put water and food up there for them and propped open the nest box door, they seem to really like that idea and the older girls don't go there during the day. Last night I moved the young girls to their temp...
So pullets can just accidentally 'poop' out an egg the first time? or for a while? and they might just lay in those 'dents' in the ground?
I'm getting ready for the new hens to come next week and putting a 55 gal drum in the 'play yard' as a place for the new ones to hang out for the intro...
today I noticed a huge change in 2 of the 4 hens combs and wattles. like in one day it's different, they grew and got redder. could eggs be here soon? funny thing is it's one rock and one red, the rock and red look the same as they did last week...... waiting and watching, have a couple...
