Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

Chickens are really resilient. If she's still alive then I think she may make it. She may have problems though. We once had a pullet attacked by a dog. Her back was humped over, her neck sunk down. She was sweet and my daughter would let her perch on her shoulder. She finally just slipped away...

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

I once witness a hawk swooping down on one of my pullets. It shaved her feather and left a clean strip of skin. I scared the hawk away but the chicken was fine except for be scared. She huddled up against the foundation for awhile. She looked pretty funny until her feather grew back.

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

Great job. I used to have open rafters and my game chickens would roost on them. Good light and ventilation from your windows. Very secure which is whats important when the birds sleep.

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

My son (13) has built two chicken tractors and redesigned a large cage into a small coop. He is letting me use one until I get mine built and I promise to get him some chickens of his own. I am going to get my family to help me build at least two (hopefully two, even better three) hoop coops...

I definitely want to try the heating pad brooder if I do chicks in the spring again. Does your heating pad have and automatic shut off? If it does can you use a timer to turn it back on every couple of hours?

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

I say go big as you can manage/afford because if its too small its hard to make it bigger, but if its a good size to begin with you can section it off for young, brooders, injured, etc. Its hard to redesign something that's too small. I really think some good roost make a huge difference in...

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

I had a problem with pack rats getting in my coup. Rats and mice can actually collapse their heads to squeeze into cracks! I put rat poison where only the rats could squeeze into and yesterday we found our first dead rat lying in the coup. We also have seen big ole rats in the house so down went...

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

The exact same thing happen with us. I put mine out in the big pen/coup when they were 5-weeks old. They went right through the fence. It was the same day my dog decided she could jump over our porch railing to 6-feet below to the ground. The result was 1 dead and 2 injured chicks. I put small...

Cute bowl. I just throw scraps on the ground where the grass is tall. They beat the grass down good where I need to walk. My husbands weed-eater went out and I'm putting my guys to work, lol. I do actually get up early to get them out of their coup. It is really hot when the sun comes up.

They are addicting. When I need a break from inside I sit in a chair outside and wait for them all to run to me. Sometimes I will have 3 or 4 in my lap, one on my should, one on the back of the chair behind my head. I look like some weird chicken-lady, lol.

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

Personally, I have had my younger/smaller birds injured and even some eventually died by being caught up in the great exit in the a.m. I try to separate the young ones at night because of this. I eventually plan to make some chicken tractors just for this reason. My older ones are about 16 weeks...

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

Very young skunks are quicker to spray that the older ones. Baby skunks are more of a musty smell than really stinky. There has been a critter around my place that has a strong odor. Not a skunk so I'm not sure what it could be. Whatever it is, I'll bet it likes chicken!

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

Actually it is a borrowed trailer that has been reconditioned into a chicken coup so we can't really do much since its not ours. I wish it was because it is like Fort Knox. Even a heavy locking door. We can only use it until we get our others done. My sons and I have been tearing down the old...

Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

I just moved my chickens to a really secured shed but their isn't really any light to speak of. I've had two young chicks die this week. I think in the dark they were trampled by the older ones. I moved my little ones to a small chicken tractor. I don't really feel that they are really secure...
