Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Eggcessive Sorry again for the long delay in updates. I did want to make a final post in this thread with the the final results from the necropsy. They are attached below. Dinkle tested positive for both types of mycoplasma and canker. Her cause of death was sepsis from the canker infection...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

I don't think that the older flock had MG prior to us getting Dorothy. We bought her at the same time as the babies and I think she gave it to Tiger. It is likely that the entire rest of our adult flock has not been exposed to MG. I am worried about them catching it when we do try to add the babies.

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

I think that's what I'll probably do since the others are fairly stable and it should only be a few more days until we get the rest of the report. I am assuming the large hens Dorothy and Tiger both have mycoplasma as well as all the babies. What does this mean for the rest of the flock? As I...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

Hey guys, sorry for the delay in updates. We decided to go with the necropsy at A&M so we could do more testing if needed. The preliminary report came back. I'll attach it below. Dinkle did test positive for mycoplasma. I spoke to the doctor on the phone. She said Dinkle's lungs looked...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Eggcessive I live in Texas and am considering sending her to the College Station one. The vet I went to said he would also be willing to do a necropsy here in town for only $30, but he probably won't have the testing resources that he others would, right? I'm not sure what all the necropsy...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock Dinkle didn't make it through the night. I had dreams about her making a miraculous recovery over and over again. It kills me. She was doing the best when everyone else was sick a week ago. She only started having that weird swelling a few days ago and now suddenly she...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

EMERGENCY: Dinkle is doing the worst I have seen her. I am worried she will not make it through the night. I am wondering if she asperated water yesterday when I tried to flush out the plaque??? She was doing okay but made a turn for the worst very quickly over the course of today and now she...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Eggcessive Thanks so much for the dosing information. I hope the new stuff gets here quick. Dinkle is much worse today and it seems that Bo as started to get worse again too. Her breathing is fine, but energy is way low and not eating or drinking much, :( I wonder if it's because the Tylan is...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Eggcessive I ordered the big thing of Tylan from Foy's as well as the antifungal. I'm surprised at the Tylan dosage though. The vet has me putting 4 teaspoons per 1 gallon of water??? Is this crazy, or is it possible he's giving us a different strength? The bottle doesn't say how many grams of...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Wyorp Rock @Eggcessive Wow thank you guys so much. I've been reading up on fungal issues and I think y'all are spot on. It doesn't stink, and the texture is hard and crusty, not sticky like canker would be. Also, fungal issues are more likely to come up when they are on antibiotics, which...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Wyorp Rock @Eggcessive Okay here's the best picture I could get one-handed. Maybe when my partner is home tomorrow I can get a better one or maybe a video. I also used a small piece of plastic to try to scrape of some of the whiteness. It was surprisingly difficult. The texture was harder...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Wyorp Rock @Eggcessive Okay when I checked under her tongue this morning there was nothing but now there is white gunk, more than before. Should I move forward with canker treatment? I'm worried about her being on multiple antibiotics at the same time since she's already on Tylan.

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Wyorp Rock Right now it looks completely normal. Yesterday it was full of mucus and bits of food stuck in there as well as some small particles of white debris under the tongue. Also a little foamy? Like bubbles in the mucus.

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Eggcessive Hmm, I don't think it's wattles growing in. It definitely seems to be interfering with her ability to swallow. Yesterday there was a good bit of mucus as well, and seeds and things were getting stuck to the inside of her beak, which I had to clean out. Under her tongue there was a...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

UPDATE!! I took Bo to the vet on Monday and they did a fecal exam. No parasites. Y'all were right. Vet said it was a lower respiratory infection as he could hear mucus in her lungs. He gave me Tylan for the whole flock, and seemed very doubtful that Bo would make it. She was pretty rough for the...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@frostic @dawg53 @Eggcessive I was just googling and people have lots of opinions on what should be in chick's water. We are currently doing the following in a gallon of water: 1 tsp of garlic powder 1 tsp apple cider vinegar 1 oz of "chicken elixer" vitamins 1 packet of electrolytes All of...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@Eggcessive Thanks so much for your reply. There is no sign of crackling while breathing, no eye bubbles, no runny noses or nasal discharge, and their watery/swollen eyes have all cleared up with the antibiotic eye drops, so no watery eyes either. I did look at symptoms of MG, but since they...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@frostic @dawg53 I'll go ahead and call the vet then. I was thinking not respiratory because there are no other respiratory symptoms?? But regardless the vet will be able to give me a confirmation of something with a fecal exam. Thanks for y'alls help. Is there anything I can do for them until...

Gapeworm not responding to Safe-Guard in chicks

@dawg53 How do I do a fecal exam? Do I just look for worms in their poo? Also thanks so much for chiming in. Does this look like gapeworm to you? @frostic Bo who is in the video has been in this state with ups and downs for the last 5 days or so. I know it looks really bad but it hasn't really...
