I was going to do Ideal since there is no minimum order for #.

Thanks-- I'm also concerned about ordering thru the mail-- I only want about 5-6 chicks. I'll work it out somehow!! I have a vacation coming up and don't want to get chicks before the vacation as it's a lot to ask a neighbor to care for chicks!

I'm looking to expand my flock a tad bit at the end of the summer. I am thinking about Buff Orpington, Wyandotte, maybe black sex link. Has anyone started chicks in late summer in our climate?

Question for Rutland area folks with new chicks-- anyone interested in getting their chicks vaccinated for Mareks? My vet will order a vial of the vaccine but I have to pay for whole thing if I don't find anyone else that wants it. Currently at $20 per chick, would love to get the cost down to...

Same to you! Lost 2 chickens to Marek's this week so kind of sad in the flock dept. I'm down from 5 to 2. :(

Mine did o.k. also, though I found them huddled around the lamp this morning.

Well thanks for asking! They are 20 weeks old and they do all seem to be hens. No one is crowing, or looking like a rooster and we're getting at least 3 eggs a day from our 5. Looks like we got what we wanted. They're a lot of fun! Just made egg salad tonight.

That's what I'm hoping but others have mentioned that if they're not first generation, these colors might not apply. And I can't get information on whether they're first generation. The one that is lighter is definitely not white/silver, the head is just a touch lighter yellow. All of them have...

Russo, are your Golden Comets three weeks old? That's what I have and I'm still trying to figure out if I have a rooster or not. I have one with a head that is a little lighter than the others, but other than that very similar. I agree it has been unbearable this week!!!

Maybe it will run out of steam. Hard to believe it's still so soggy even after this long (since Tuesday night). Good luck with the wedding!

I think I actually need to turn the heat on this evening, it is so raw. It is May 27!!!!!! Moved my chicks to a big dog crate (still inside) with lots of branch roosts. They are so happy! I'm starting to give them a few veggies and fruits (just a little at a time). Our run is almost done...

THe ones I got today are Golden Comets. By the way, what is pasty butt? Will I know it if my chicks have it?

It's great there are so many Vermonters. What a beautiful day it was, but definitely muggy. My chicks are "due" on May 14th. I'm getting ready with a large bin, shavings, a heat lamp, waterer, etc.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum, new to having a flock (well, don't actually have it yet, I'm preparing!). I live in Pittsford, just north of Rutland. I have chicks on order (5 of them) and I am making ready! Nice to know you are all here!
