Alaskan~ yes that would be a lot to easier to decide to just say they were black, but Blackbirds13 is spot on with the fact that genetics for a solid pure black Marans and a Black Copper Marans are 2 different things. There are folks out there that say their birds are pure black, but then they...
Gosh, I cannot believe how much I have missed my Marans friends since the mountain lion came through and wiped me out! I cannot believe how much I have forgotten!
Zanna!!!!!!!!! I see you lurking my friend! Hi, I hope you and your birds are doing fabulous! It's been soooooo hot over here...
Cooi! Got it! The BC male that I shared with you the other day has the flame going on with a nice medium size black stripe (posted of photo of him and his brother over in the Blue Copper thread for comparison). Vicki agreed that he would be the best bet and not the other who is Mahogany, but...
I should elaborate on my thinking about that. Every male that I have seen that is true BC or Blue Copper that has shown copper in the chest has never covered the entire feather, just kinda been like an edging. Other males that I have seen with color in their chest have shown the entire feather...
All right cool! Now do me another favor, define the copper in the chest! :) Copper in the chest having the stripe of black in the middle, or the entire feather full of orange? What if a person sees hackle color that shows the entire feather full of orange, no stripe in the middle? Any...
Understood my friend! Just interested in how and where the green can produce purple. Will keep you updated on what I find. I too, am so disgusted with what I see out there on the Marans market now days that I hesitate contacting many, many people, and would rather work with the birds in my yard...
Don~ What does a person do with 5 Black Copper pullets that are as black as night and do not show one stitch of copper, but loaded with green sheen? :)
Sometimes it covers with black, sometimes not, but is thought of to be an indication of Wheaten influence in the genetics, or at least that is what it was thought of before I took a forced sabbatical from breeding Marans for a while. :) And what Don said!!!!!
Really!?!?! That is particularly great information and totally interesting! Wonder how the green eventually makes it to purple? I think you just brought up something that deserves further investigation. Going to talk to my biology professor tomorrow (he is also a chicken fancier and breeder) to...
Agreed! I see only green sheen on these birds. Indeed these birds are stunning, but all photos, and information that I have seen of this particular breed does not talk about purple, nor has shown it. I love chicken genetics!!!!!! The diversity of how they can be, what they can be, and what they...
Thanks Don! I thought that your keen eye wouldn't miss that, but then thought to self, maybe I had been out of the loop so long that I was missing something. ¡Thanks again mi amigo!
It almost looks like these pullets have a Beard. They look real nice though. Don
Argh! I don't why it quoted like that, geesh, but anyway, I agree with you Don, they are nice looking young birds, and have a nice copper color coming in. But, what about the mossiness, near the saddle area on...
Let me see if I can help clarify how I understand what Don is talking about, and retract my previous statement to calling the green sheen a variation of turquoise color, I should have maybe said dark dark iridescent greenish teal. :)
Purple sheen on any black bird is undesirable, it is an...
In regards to Magdelane's post and in response to One Chick Two, I do not intend this post as argumentative in any way, please let me say that first and foremost. However, I do not see anything of a sprig on this pullet, even with zooming in.The only thing I see about this pullet that I would...
Slyvester~ it is gorgeous! No matter the breed, I agree, but in Marans, only certain sheen colors are desirable. Hope Don comes by to explain the difference for us. He is a goldmine of knowledge for chickens, and for Marans. :)
I don't think of it as a drawback, but rather, as a way to determine a desirable quality to an undesirable quality. Purple means something that I am sorry to say I cannot remember, the green means a quality I cannot remember either, which is why I asked for clarification. I have been out of...
I think, what I understand you are describing is the beetle green sheen that can often look a bit, deep turquiosey/blue, is the green sheen that is being discussed. I see that on my birds too depending on the lighting. The sheens are a refraction of light on the feather, and how we see it, or at...
