I haven't had great luck either. I usually need to see the whole back to make out the chipmunk stripes which are usually a little darker shade of yellow on the females...
Some of the head spot action seems to be related to the crest and not specifically to the barring / auto sexing element.
Not in my limited experience with white sports; purchased from other CL breeders and hatched from my own CL stock.
So far the recessive white sport Cream Legbars have been a lovely clean white with no staining (i.e. no yellowish feathers which I have on other dominant white as well as splash...
As there are so many color and pattern complexities to the CL, not to overlook nuances of body type, that it is a commitment to work with the original imports. I can't see the benefit of introducing another breed in the mix.
Which crosses do you think people are making?
How many generations do you think it would take for them to breed back to something that satisfies the SOP and/or makes a convincing Cream Legbar?
I also like the white sports, but have not tried to breed them directly. I actually agree with your thought to utilize standard Cream Legbars to diversify the parent stock if your goal is to breed white sports.

In my experience, the chick down is yellow regardless of male/female; however the chipmunk markings have some yellow/gold to them. This may account for more color in the female chick down.

Hi! I was just asking someone else how often they are seeing the white sports. Mine show up less than 25% of the time in the breeding pair. Have you kept any as they mature?
