We've had plenty of Orb weavers around here and they're usually just small bodied and long legged. Bet this one is a female due to the size of it. The behavior of it sounds right, too. Mystery solved. Thanks so much!
Wow, that may be it! I never figured it for an Orb Weaver due to its chunky body. I've always thought those had really long spindly legs. Thanks, Debi! Definitely has the pattern.

It's about an inch long in this position. Not sure how big it would be with legs outstretched. I'm looking online to try to ID, but if someone knows off the top of their head, that would be swell. I've seen two or three of them here.
