    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

5/6 that went to lockdown hatched! Way better than I expected, and the last one still looks and sounds good. I've assisted more than usual. These aren't "valuable" to anyone but me. These are offspring from my first chickens first eggs after we sold our rooster. But I figured out that this is a...

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

I assisted the two pippers. I know I'm supposed to let them be, but I ignored that for these two. These are just backyard mixes but I'm still learning from all of this and have three kids looking forward to this. The two chicks are resting in the incubator with a little shell left to kick off...

Thanks. I'm nervous. I chipped away some shell to help out the backwards pipper. The two pips still are breathing and trying. The hatched one is lonely. It's chirping loudly every once in a while. This is abit nerve wracking. And I'm tired.

Two more pips, but one in the narrow end. I'm ready to assist if needed. I am thrilled with that many potential chickies. My son named our first chick already. Mongatsika. If you've seen Zoboomafoo you may have heard it before. It means, I can't believe my eyes. Amazing!

Day 20. Hopefully it's strong enough to make it. I'm not confident the other 5 will hatch.

Ha. I'm going to a chicken show tomorrow and hope to pick up 6-12 more eggs to incubate. That's busy, right?

Lockdown, finally! It's a relief. 6 eggs remain. They all look good. I saw a toe wiggling in one egg. :)

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

Day 17 and I swear I saw a wiggle. Phew. Now to prepare for helping out these guys. The pullet eggs have a pretty tough membrane. Cranking up humidity in the morning. Sterilizing tweezers and sponges. I hope early hatchers come out tomorrow because I'm gone most of the day Sunday. So, chicks who...

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

Day 16 here. My double yolker stopped developing. One other is a quitter. I started with 10. Down to 6. Hoping at least 4 hatch. 4/6 of the remaining eggs look very good still. Pullet eggs are proving to be as difficult as reported. I'm already planning for the next hatch, which is relieving my...

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

I'm so impatient. This is my second hatch. I discarded two yesterday (1 infertile and 1 blood ring), so I'm down to 8. Half look great with body veining airsac and movement. Half are good with at least a couple of those things. I marked all the air pockets. They seem to be fine. I have not been...

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

I'm on day 5 for 10 barnyard mixes. I candled yesterday and only thought one was questionable. I candled today and a different one looks questionable. I really need to learn the lesson of candling less often. I'm manually turning so I keep thinking it's not that much different to just pull...

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

That's exciting and surprising. I wonder if weather plays a part in incubation time. I only set my eggs on Wednesday, so I won't officially candle until Saturday. However, one of the eggs is much larger than the others so I decided to candle it last night. I believe it's a double yolker. I know...

    September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

I set 10 eggs today. They are pullets' eggs which have lower hatch rates. I'm using an old still air LG which has a lower hatch rate. And I sold the rooster a week ago so fertility rate might be lower too. My goal is to get 2-6 chicks. If I get 0 I'll buy some eggs to hatch in October. :)
