Mahonri and all the gang;
I am beginning to think I have some sort of strain of super chicken. These things are proving to be indestructible, and super active. In 1 week 24 chicks have eaten 12-1/2 lbs of chick starter. If I open the brooder and the feeder is near empty they attack my hand...
Thanks Mahonri, 29 is a nickname I have carried for over 30 years. Many people who I have worked with over the years, have no clue as to what my real name is. While at work, I am 29. NYD hatch last one out being my name sake, must be a story in there some where.
I am tettering on the...
Don't want to jinx anything.
I put the last 3 in the brooder Friday afternoon, 2 of the 3 were no acting very vigorous, figured that when I got home from work this morning at 0500, they'd be gone.
Low and behold, I opened the brooder door, and I couldn't find the slow ones, best I could I...
0600 update
21 out, the sicklie one is up and I can't tell which one it was. The 3 remaining eggs are zipping.
So far with a home made incubator and broken thermostat I'm doing pretty good. I went into lock down with 24, 21 hatched 3 still working. The brooder is ready for them.
New count 6 out 14 zipping 4 doing nothing
Edit-----
1915 hours 10 out but 1 not doing so good. 14 eggs left of those most are zipping.
With the temp control problems I had these must have been a super strong bloodline of rhode island reds.
Nothing pipping --- nothing zipping
Grabbed a random egg, candled it, no internal pip but I can detect random , movement. With the temp control problems of the last week, no telling when or if , they'll bust out. I was encouraged, because with the wide variance of temps 94* to 102*, I figured...
Well I have lost all confidence in my hatching any out of the 25 eggs I have left. Temperature control problems, thermostat or design?
About 50% of the eggs have gone black of the others I can detect movement in only a few.
Okay, looks like the remote digital thermometer went bad.
Medical thermometer reading was 100.8*
Candling still showed movement in eggs. Some eggs I can't see much of anything, mostly just a dark mass.
Well had an awh shoot moment this morning.
Temp reading of 105.4. Two thermometers in the incubator the other thermometer is still reading 100 like it has from day 1. So I am hoping for thermometer failure rather than 105.4 actual reading. I will candle a few to see if I still have movement.
Yes! 26 out of 30 sounds good, but I am not going jump up and down yet. I attribute this number to the eggs not the design of my home made incubator.
First the eggs were aquired within 1 mile of my home, and placed in the incubator after a 24 hour waiting period. So from chicken to incubator...
Had to make me a old fashioned candler today so I could candle at 8pm.
30 eggs cooking, first candling results
26 growing, I could see veins in all, movement in some
2 porous shells, should never been placed in the incubator in the 1st place. Had no candler when I set the eggs.
2 duds, no...
Set my eggs at 1800 yesterday afternoon.
30 Rhode Island Reds purebreeds. So far so good. Digital thermometer says overnite max 100.4, minimum 99.4.
Might have to do an emergency chicken coop build today. The two new Rhode Island Red roosters I bought are taking a defined dislike to the...
I am going to join in.
Brand new incubator, built it last week, finished it and plugged it in on Monday. Spent the last few days fine tuning the thermostat. Got it set and it holds 99-100*.
Going to put 30 Rhode Island Red eggs in tonight, for an initiation run.
At this point I am having...
