    Paralyzed hens

I talked with the vet last night about the necropsy report on Holly. IT WAS NOT MAREK'S!! That's the good news. Results showed visceral renal gout and uric acid (this is what was causing their paralysis)http://www.lorikeets.com/gout.htm , a high levels of Vitamin D and calcium and toxicum...

    Paralyzed hens

Despite my pain in doing it, I culled Hallie the other day. I just couldn't stand to see her suffer like Hollie did now that my knowledge of this disease was first hand. I won't know results of necropsy until some time next week, but I know what it was. :( The 3 older hens are doing well btw...

    Paralyzed hens

Another article I read: http://www.wilderness-survival.net/chicken-diseases/ Marek's Disease Marek's is one of the more serious diseases that your chickens can get, and it's usually fatal. It's a form of herpes that effects the nerves and sometimes the internal organs of your birds...

    Paralyzed hens

I've never vaccinated a chicken. Is it hard? How much is the vaccine and I see you can only get it in 1000 dosage. So it looks like some may not succumb to this. That's good to hear. Anymore I will make sure if I ever get any more chicks they will be vaccinated! Is there anything you can buy...

    Paralyzed hens

Thank you , babs for that article. It was very informing. http://www.firststatevetsupply.com/content/view/17/37/ CHIRP I TOTALLY disagree with you that chickens should not be considered pets or that their lives are any less important then that REGISTER high mucky-muck WHATEVER!! SO does...

How do you disinfect wood, your ground, your yard? Anything that these 2 have come in contact with? And how much Probiotics, Vit E and Poly Vi Sol do you use?

    Paralyzed hens

Leadwolf, how many chickens do you have? I know if I lose all these, I'll never have anymore. I can't for at least 7 years anyways and then I doubt it.

    Paralyzed hens

It's not conclusive yet, but the vet is pretty sure it's Marek's. They are going to do a pathology test on Hollie's body and it will be several days before I hear anything. In the meantime I'm having to force feed Hallie and worry about my other 3 hens. This sooo sucks!!

    Paralyzed hens

After writing the above message, I went to check on the hens and Hollie was non-responsive. She died a short time later. It breaks my heart! She was my favorite little girl. She lived such a short life. I will miss her.

    Paralyzed hens

I also have 3 other chickens that have showed no signs of paralysis so it's hard to believe it's Marek's. I'm now starting to believe it could be Botulism contracted during our horrible rainstorms/flooding. These two are the smallest of the 5 and stick together like bookends so I can only assume...

    Paralyzed hens

My girls are still alive this morning. Hollie, the first hen seems to be a little stronger, but she's just skin and bones. She's drinking but not eating. Hallie, the second hen has gotten worse. She's not walking at all now and won't eat or drink. I'm making up some Ricket's Diet feed to see if...

    Paralyzed hens

I have 2 rhody/sussex 6 months old that have the same symptoms. The 1st one that showed signs of illness was acting strangely. She would stagger around the yard or limp and I thought she had hurt her leg. I couldn't find any signs of an injury so continued to observe her. She continued to...
