I have a young polish that has been sick for two weeks. I am treating her with Duramycin. Initially both eyes were swollen shut and her Nares had some drainage. I isolated her and have cleaned her eyes and beak with warm water daily and now she has her eyes open and is slightly better with a ver slight decrease in lethargy. The problem is now the wheezing (well it has been there all along) Can anyone give me some advice? I worry that she may never be able to join the flock and may be a carrier of something. This started when I think she got overheated...

Welcome to BYC. Have you had all of your chickens the same amount of time, and did they come from the same place, such as a local breeder, or a hatchery? Swollen eyes with nasal drainage can be a sign of MG or coryza, and coryza may have a very bad odor. Without having her tested, it is impossible to tell which of the 5 or 6 common diseases she may have. Each disease can be complicated by secondary infections, some of which can be the other 5 iseases or E.coli. Many of the diseases make chickens carriers for life, and some of your others may have already been exposed. I would try to get her tested, and then read a lot about diseases before you do anything permanent. If your other chickens have been exposed, some may get it, some may not, so you may want to close your flock, and try not to spread it. f she dies or you decide to cull her, you can get a necropsy by your state vet, which would give you a diagnosis. A local vet or testing center may be able to do a culture on her. If my chicken were diagnosed with MG, I would close my flock, but if she had coryza, then I would cull her. Here are some links for that and some about the common diseases:

Thanks So much. I cought her very early and seperated her from the flock. none of my other chickens is symptomatic and I am with them several times a day. I have used the best isolation technique and believe i need to cull her permanently. it is so sad to have a sick one....She is new from a farm i am not familiar with but that had hundreds of chicks. felt like a puppy mill...
