My feed store had "Madison" chicks for sale. When I asked them for breed info, they had no clue and even said they couldn't find anything on Google. I've tried searching the internet for anything on this breed and can't find a thing. Does anyone know about this kind of chicken?

Never heard of it. Maybe they come from Madison, WI or named after the mermaid in Splash.

It also doesn't show up on the Feathersite.

I'm constantly amazed at the lack of customer service at so many feed stores.

I have two thoughts on this.....first is they're a made up mixed breed from someone local.

Second is they're Marans, not Madisons, and someone got confused. But Marans aren't too common at feed stores....although my Grange, which is really good about labeling chicks otherwise, year after year sells Coo Coo Marans

I can't believe I was right on both counts.

"We love the name Madison - it reminds us of the Daryl Hannah in the 80's movie, Splash! But it is also the name of the capital of Wisconsin, our closest urban center."

good call!

yep, I'm so thrilled to have yet another "breed" concocted by a hatchery......

If they all look completely different from one another, can they be a breed or are they a barnyard mix?

Maybe I'll branch out and fill a pen with all kinds of chickens, hatch a lot and call the breed St. Louis.
