I am going to mount my antlers from my little buck that I shot, I want to know how long it takes for the antlers to dry out, so I can take the skin off, and how to take it off. Thanks, if there are any of you....

Ticks, did you saw the antlers off the skull? If you didn't, the whole skull/antlers makes a very beautiful wall hanging. Just simmer it in a pot outdoors on a hot plate. Don't boil it hard and don't submerge the antlers.

If you sawed them off with just a skull plate, do the same but again don't submerge the antlers, let it dry indoors for a month then mount it on a wood plaque.

Change to water often and clean off softened tissue as you do so.

Ticks Yup just remove the skin now, remove any brain matter or flesh in or on the skull cap, rub borax on and around the skull cap and let it air dry, you can boil as ann said then rub borax on to it, Borax will bug proof it... then mount the rack to a panel of your choice for skulls caps..

Here's a good link on how to mount them

Here check my side hobby web site out..been messing with skulls for along time..

Thanks! My dad did his Anticostti antlers by him self. it was easy, throw the fasteners over the skull, throw on the felt pad thing, tack it on. Of course its not taxidermist quality but its not a bad mount by any means. SterlingAcres directed me to this and I think I might go with it. http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/product/102435/deer-antler-kit

Oh
, here is a pic of my "buck" I thought he was a doe when I shot him poor guy. Tiny antlers, but big antlers for a year and a half old buck.

I had to shoot him 4 times with a .308, 180 grain!
First shot through the lungs, second through the leg, third through the lungs, he jsut kept walking, fell down. That's when I close range shot him in the neck! Iron buck! (must have come from Pittsburg

The first shot would have done it, he was dead and didn't know it yet, but he was finished with a lung shot with a 308..
I use a 7MM mag here during rifle just because it hits so hard.. Just the shock alone is a wake up call..

Its fun doing it your self anyway..alot cheaper and if you do enough of them they turn out pretty good, in the pic i made all the wooden panels myself and bought the cap covers to put over the skulls caps..

I didn't want him to suffer ya know so I shot him, the shots didn't seem to phase him. Like I said to my friends when they saw is tiny rack, you can't eat the antlers.

here i will try. Shot in the dark here but....
