Hello all! I have a Leghorn (why do I keep getting these again?

) and I've been monitoring her for frostbite as it's been quite cold here in Boise last couple nights. So here's a pic of that

I've been treating it with neosporin and vaseline the last few nights...anyone have extra pointers?
Also, when I had her inside just now cleaning her up and treating her, I noticed her chest seems kinda large, there's a tennis ball sized, squishy lump just above the breastbone and slightly off-center to the right...

So what does everyone think of that?

Not really hard or lumpy...pretty soft and squishy really...she still eats and drinks fine always the first to greet me even on cold mornings. She went to town on a bowl of Cheerios when I had her in this evening.

It sounds like you're treating the frostbite correctly. The points on her comb may die and fall off. Keep watch for any infection (pus, odors).

The 2&3rd photos looks like it is her crop. Check it first thing in the morning before she has had anything to eat/drink. The crop should be flat or empty. If after a nights sleep and it's still full, then you have some type of crop issue.

Some hens who overeat repeatedly may develop a pendulous crop. The links that were posted to read in post # 4 by WR include info about that. I would just keep her on regular layer feed without the treats.

They really only get layer feed and only treats when I have veggie scraps or whatnot....not super regularly...plus she's a Leghorn, they're always super scrawny IME.

After finally getting home tonight I don't think her crop has gone down enough. Wyorp Rock, thank you for the article on crops, I am worried she has impacted or doughy crop...I started her on the home remedy recipe for doughy crop tonight and I am keeping her in w/o food...I syringe administered the first bit and now she has free choice water hanging in her hospital box. No food until tomorrow and then it will be scrambled eggs or banana...she still seems lively enough which is good, and she's still my only hen laying....she happily scratched up all the fresh straw in the box I put her in for the night. I have started a new job, so this is just really stressful to deal with, ugh...I have heard of people helping to treat sour crop and such with AC vinegar? Is this a good thing to add to the water at all?
