Great pictures. I may show them to my science class. On a similar note, I had a clutch of marans eggs to recently hatch. Of the 3 eggs one was accidentally crushed right at hatching time. Fortunately it happened on hatch day so despite the whole side of the egg crushed in I was able to help the chick hatch. The second egg hatched out completely unassisted. The third egg, I could hear the little one peeping strongly but then for some reason was unable to pip. I seriously thought about assisting but didn't know where to "pip" since I couldn't tell whether he was positioned correctly. Long story short, I have had this happen before usually with dark colored eggs and eggs of young pullets. I wonder if it was a hen problem (too thick a shell) vs a chick problem. Anyone else notice that before?

I think it was ~40% the majority of the time, but I did have to raise the humidity once for a peachick. A couple of people have posted about swollen heads, and I thought this would give people a good understanding of what that means, though this is the most severely swollen one I have seen. :(
