I have been using just a sharpie marker and making the tiniest of marks as I was worried about the ink.

I use pencil.
i use anything i can get my hand on that my children didnt steal. ive had no issues with the chicks dying or anything....
I use a pencil. I read somewhere that the ink of a marker can go through the pores of the egg shell.
Lots of folks use sharpies. I do.
pencil if i can find one. sharpie if it's closer. i write the date set and an X on the other side. no problems using either.
