So I was looking to clear some trees from my property and I realized that I have a small handful of walnut trees. I think they are a hybrid "paradox" walnut tree?? Anyone know anything about harvesting / selling / doing anything with these? Is it worth while keeping them or just cut them down as planned?
We have a few and the hubby keeps bugging me to learn about roasting/harvesting the walnuts. If you cut it down the wood burns great. You can sell it for firewood.
WHAT a week. Lab called and along with mycoplasma my chickens MIGHT have salmonella. So, they are sending the department of health or something to come take more samples.

I have decided to kill these birds, disinfect everything, and start a closed flock. And I called up the guy I got sick birds from to let him know, in case he starts an outbreak selling his birds. Anyone know how this will go down? Like will they roll in with a big van and space-suit-like clothing to do this? I mean, I live in suburbia (unfortunately) and have neighbors (unfortunately).

Oh no! Keep us posted. What was going on that you got your chickens tested?
Even though when I usually ask a chicken related question it never gets answered, I am going to ask this anyway...how do the PVC waterers with the nipples work in the winter time? I am already thinking ahead to winter and how much I hate having to break up ice to change the water a few times a day. I have been wanting to do the PVC and nipple set up for a while but I don't know ifit will be more trouble than its worth in the winter. Doesn't the whole thing freeze?
I am so sick of the frozen water too. I have a few ideas of things I want dh to build for food and water. Eventually he will run electic to the coop but I also want to build this http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/...rage-heat-just-drink-a-lot-of-soda/#more-3769 I would love some for the house but they are so pricey to buy the ones big enough to make electricity for the entire house. A windmill would be great too!

Wow. I am so sorry. You probably already know that Mycoplasma can be transmitted through the egg so not to hatch eggs from your infected chickens. Here is a really good read from another BYCer that dealt with Mycoplasma: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/587948/rebuilding-my-farm As for the Pullorum test coming back 'suspect', It is fairly common, I know other people that this has happened to, as well as myself. There was enough blood drawn that they Re-tested at the lab with the original sample and did not need to send anyone out for more blood. I hope everything goes well for you, let us know if they do show up in their Tyvek suits and take every last chook. (My worst nightmare)

This soda can thing looks awesome! I might have to play around with that idea. I have looked at a couple sites about building a windmill generator but haven't done anything with that either. I guess I better get serious about it soon because even though it is still July, winter has a way of sneaking up on me before I even realize its here.

On a similar note, my cousin made a pool heater by attaching a 50' garden hose to a piece of plywood, painting the whole thing black, position the contraption towards the sun, and connecting the entire thing to his pool return lines....worked well.....

stupid predators, I know they have to eat but come on now - hope you get it!!!!

I was looking at traps today at the hardware store, not that I need one yet but I know I will one day!
It was about 100 yds away when I saw it so til I got one of the guns it was gone. I'll be picking up some traps and some more ammo. Love the little guy with the minigun, that's too funny. Remind me of T2 lol

lol thought you'd get a laugh out of it.

Speaking of pests, I am having some creature come at night in the garden I have right by the front of the house, digs a bit around my flowers (thankfully hasn't dug any out) and then it craps right on the front porch or over by the rocks that circle my other garden .... I am getting beyond annoyed with this going on

The first thing I want to see when I walk out the front in the morning is my flowers, not dirt and animal crap.

I am thinking I might have to get the webcam we have and sit it in the front window & record over night to find out what the heck it is.

Anyone else ever have this problem???

I am betting skunk since it is digging, probably for grubs.

As for the walnut trees somebody was asking about, Walnut is a great hard wood. It is used for cabnets and the limbs make great firewood. If they were straight trees and fairly big with usable sections of say 6-8' I would cut them down and have somebody cut them into usable lumber. You can find people with portable sawmills that will come to you and cut them up. Black Walnut tree's are the bomb, Lovely colored wood.

ARGGH!
I have a chocolate Muscovy baby that I didn't know was a scovy when I bought it at the car show... IT KEEPS PICKING AT THE OTHER DUCKLINGS BLOOD FEATHERS!!! What is wrong with it!!! I am tired of it! I heard the babies yelling this morning and I go running out to find them all looking at me like I am the idiot.. stood there eye balled them and then on about 3 of the white scovy ducklings are bleeding from their wings and one of the ducklings I am not sure what they are. How do I get it to stop???? Is it deficient in something??? I never had this with any other duckling besides scovy.
