My pullet -3 months- has had Gape Worm --classic symptoms-- for the last three weeks. She's about 12 oz. I treated her 3 times with Invermectin (Ivomec), no improvement.
I then treated her 6 times with Fenbendazole (Safe-guard liquid for Goats), at 3-day intervals, first 1/2 drop, then 1 drop, then 2 drops, them 3 cc mized ion 1/8 cup water mixed in 2 lbs. crumbles for 3 days, to the flock,
then today with 3 drops Safe-guard again. I don't want to risk any more dosage of Fenbendazoleut... I'm about to spend precious reserve funds on the specialty vet, but I REALLLY would like some imput what's worked for others... how many doses & how long does it take.

She still gapes, shakes her head, and coughs. I never could see red worms in her windpipe. Any other thing this could be?? What ???

It sure sounds like the classic symptoms. Is there any sneezing?

It has Fenbendazole, whereas Flubenvet has Flubendazole. I don't know if Flubendazole is available in the US. I'll check into it.
It seems like a similar chemical compound, and it's the drug everyone else on this forum has had success with.
I'm on the verge of taking her to the specialty vet, if she doesn't improve by tomorrow

Thanks, I'll check to see its availability.

Sorry, I edited my post when I realized that Fenbendazole is used to treat gapeworm. I think we should keep bumping this until we get some other input. I'm a little afraid of the wormers myself. I haven't used one yet but I'm thinking about it.

i hope someone answers this because i was thinking that my cks may also have this...they only sneez in the morning when they first get out of the coop but i have not noticed any other symptoms..i have already treated with wizine but im not sure that will work for this? ill be watching the posts maybe they will answer all our questions.

Ivermectin will kill gapeworm. Safeguard 10% liquid suspension...3cc/ml per gallon of water will kill gapeworm. To be sure your pullet has gapeworm...use a Q-tip and gently stick it one inch into her throat, very gently swab her throat and gently pull it out. If you see a red in color "Y" shaped worm on the Q-tip, you'll have your answer. I recommend you have someone help you to do this. Good luck.

So maybe it isn't gapeworm. My money is on an ear problem. Rufus

Rufus,

I'm beginning to think you're right. She's a very small bird--I couldn't get the swab in to do a test with 2 people helping-- but nothing I've used has killed "it" so far.

I guess this warrants a trip to the vet after all. She has no balance problems or discharge,

but no one else in the flock shows gape worm symptoms, and my worming treatments are failures.

HOWEVER, I do have a variety of bird antibiotics. What's the opinion out there?

Is there a particular one that treats ear infection, or is the vet the best bet?

I'm leaning toward the latter, as I can't diagnose bird ears at all.

Well, it's apparently not gapeworm. She has a sharp cough, half-closed eyes, a swollen throat, and is halfway through a course of Baytril & doxycycline prescribed by the vet for "respiratory infection", 7 days out.
She's no better. A little worse each day. No worms, though
