Lice won't go away...suggestions?

I am as big of a fan of sevin dust for bugs as the next person, but I wouldn't put it on your dogs and cats without checking with your vet. Some things adversely affect dogs and cats (esp. cats) and everyone is just amazed that it happened.

Additionally, I wouldn't want that sevin dust coming in the house onto my sofa/floor. It is toxic. Just thought I would also mention that everyone should be using gloves, mask, long sleeves, take shower afterwards with sevin and poultry dust, like all chemicals.
THanks for the input.

I have had friends apply the topical flea meds from the vets and had adverse reactions. Like killed the dog reactions. Just saying . . . these are all chemicals. I'm picking the cheaper one the keeps monty in my pocket instead of handing it to a vet.

Edited to add:
I also did a significant google search looking for alternatives to the vet,
read $$$$, choices for flea management. Cats are particularly sensitive. I did not use Sevin on my pets without reasonable thought and research first. I love my pets but hate what the fleas are doing to them.

I also wonder if the frontline etc. is really all that safe for us as well. Food for thought.

When I looked sevin or permethrin (I forget which) up once I did find a mention that the effectiveness goes away outside in the rain after several weeks as I was considering an outdoor dust bath. So it should be kept out of the rain. Also keep in mind that you are better off offering the dust bath **** containing chemicals***(edited to add) once in a while, to avoid resistance buildup with permethrin, and to avoid constant toxic materials on your hens with sevin.

I like the idea of a dust bath contained in a large litter pan; mine just didn't use it. As not all my birds have the problem, and not all birds use the same dust bath area, I will need to use the sevin on only an infected bird. THis should reduce exposure to the sevin and my exposure, too.

Thank you everyone for great ideas and a super discussion.

Wood ashes will be my number one choice. We have plenty from our wood stove! ANd will reserve the Sevin for occassional use, especially on a specific bird. I do see merit in reapplying when the next batch of bugs lice hatch.

Great input everyone. I learned far more than I expected. TY
