Thought my Pullet was going to Die! Ended up with a surprise!

Yesterday and today I'm painting cages. Yesterday I was out and one of my pullets that just started laying was walking around checking out what I was doing. She seemed fine. After a little while, she walked away and I could see her vent was red and bloody looking and looked like her insides were coming out. I ran over to see if she was alright and find out what was wrong and she moved away. I followed her and all of a sudden, she plops out and egg and walks away.

I was shocked and my 15 year old son was cracking up. Here I am with my face down trying to see a chicken's butt and bam! I've seen them lay eggs before, but have never seen it happen this close or detailed.

So if your hens and pullets suddenly look like they are losing their insides, stand back and wait for the egg.

She was fine. She's half Maranas and I could actually see the color being added. I was just so up close and personal I felt bad about her having my face in her business. She had been in a nest box, but I think she came out to see if I had treats. She's absolutely fine, it's just that I was scared and then shocked and then laughed like crazy. She avoided me a bit after that. I caught the egg just as it was hitting the ground. She was too busy walking away from me to care. I thought I was seeing blood and then a bloody egg, but it was just the color going onto it. I wonder if anyone else has been close enough to see that happen.

What a terrific surprise - I would love to see the color going on the shell, but maybe not so close and personal like. And yes, I would have been worried up the wazoo about her, too! Ain't nature fabulous?
 
I've had a hen prolapse a vent. And that is what it sounded like. Usually it just happens when they are laying, for no particular reason other than the vent is 'stretched' or 'tired'. The egg doesn't even need to be over sized or anything. I would keep an eye on her though, you shouldn't see a bloody vent... under almost any circumstance.
 
She's absolutely fine. What I saw was the egg being colored. It was just out enough to see something in the middle. That vent has to stretch a little to get the egg out, but all I saw was a round core and was trying to see what was wrong. My heart almost stopped because I've been waiting for her to start laying. Egg slipped right out and I caught it as the tip barely touched the dirt. Man was that think sticky! LOLI had it in the house before it dried and had to peel it off my fingers.

The cool thing is I didn't know she was laying and she's my only pullet that made it for a project I have. She's a beautiful bird and I'm trying to add a colored egg as a trademark, so now I can get her out of the flock with all the different roos and hens and into a breeder en with the roo I'm using.

I tell ya, seeing the egg pain was amazing. At least now. Sure was usetting before I found out what was going on .
