I brought home my chicks today, three little pullets. No names yet, waiting to see a little personality first.
This is the barred plymouth rock.

This one's the Golden Wyandotte

She's a production red

The three girls just hanging out in the brooder/ferret cage.
For now as small as they are I'll be keeping them in my very spacious ferret cage, it's more than a foot wide and 2 1/2 feet long. That is enough room for now, correct? Ill be putting up a brooder made from those cardboard panels once they need more room.
I'm wondering about stress, as my chicks aren't chirping or moving around a whole lot, just sort of sitting around. They haven't been huddling so I'm pretty sure they are warm enough. Sorry chicken noobie. lol
Also I'm wondering...I sort of got caught up in the excitement and forget to check butts for matted poo. None of them have it but the barred rock has a naked butt...why?

could be cuz you just brought them home today. i would give them some Polyvisol (without iron) if you have some. mix it in their water. if you don't have some, put some sugar in their water. then dip their beaks in the water to make sure they get some and know where the water is. theyre so cute!!!!

they are adorable. Most Def dip their beaks in the water. I had two that would have dehydrated otherwise. They are such cutie pies. I just love little chicks. I have noticed that all 9 of mine like their little neck stroked from right under the beak and down the breast. And if it is chripping really loud when you hold it then breath warm air on it (kinda like you would if you were gonna warm your hands) It seems to keep them content.
