Hi, all,

I live in colorado, just north of Colorado and I am wanting to adopt 2-3 chickens for my backyard. I haven't checked with the city ordinance yet but that is my first task on Monday. But I am wondering if there are better breeds that are tolerant to the cold and snow. I am a veterinary technician and want to do all the research I need to before going into this and even though I have seen countless breeds all over the state I am trying to get the best chickens that can tolerate our weather. Yesterday, May 11 2012, we had snow so it is wachy weather out here. I will want to get them soon, if the town allows them, so they are accustomed to their surroundings before the cold weather comes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

from washington state glad you joined us!

as long as you provide shelter and a place to keep out of the cold drafts, and plenty of food chickens do very well in all cooler climates. My sister lives in Colorado and her chicken do very well even when the weather drops below colder temps!

Hi, I'm so excited---I am adopting (tentatively) a Welsummer pullet that is a special needs chicken with a leg that is bad but seems to be doing very well. I am also looking at a Wyandotte hen. I am a veterinary technician and I know I can work with the pullet. I have a special place in my heart for any special needs animals and rescues and I love that they are breeds that can handle the winters out here. Thank you all for your help, several of you mentioned the Wyandotte breed so she should work out well. I will post pics when I get them.
