diatomaceous earth

Chickens benefit from diatomaceous earth a lot actually. You can use it in a dust bath to help with fleas or mites. You can also add a small amount to their food which is supposed to not only help their health but it can help chickens who have stopped laying to begin laying again. Try it out and let me know if it actually works.

Also if your diatomaceous earth is weird I would check out the brand before using it. What brand is it? I might be able to tell you if its ok or not. If it comes from perma-guard and says food grade or food codex grade, you should be good. There are a few other safe distributors as well so don't be scared if its not perma-gaurd. A safe bet to buy from is PureEarthD they are inexpensive, low shipping and pretty reliable.

Something cool about DE, that I never thought of because it is kind of gross. BUT, if your dog eats chicken poop, he gets wormed too!
We sprinkle it about our coop yard and on any feces in the backyard to keep the flies under control. We put it IN THEIR food for extra calcium and control of parasites.

You can put the stuff in the kitty box and in your dogs food, too. There are studies where it is beneficial to humans mixed with water (have not tried that yet).

Great stuff.

My kids mixed it with water and made pottery (when I was NOT looking)...but it made really pretty white bowls.

OH, ours is white usually. But I think it could be gray, too. The stuff is the microscopic remains of exoskeletons and I believe the powder itself is called "ash". It may be terminology, not an added ingredient, but I do not know for sure. Our bag reads D.E. FLOUR. Food grade is the important thing and don't breath in the stuff. I love it, and when the hens eat it, their poop is fly poison. HA HA!

I believe the gray powder is from the Calcium Bentonite that is added to the DE. I looked it up before I bought it and the CB is a clay with other mineral nutriants. I learned about DE from a friend who had the white powder she was using for herself. She loves the stuff and says it has helped her hair and nails grow better and stronger. I bought the gray stuff yesterday and tried it with a cup of coffee this morning which promptly got dumped down the drain!! It was terrible! I will stick to using it with the animals!!
