My adorable little Brown African goslings arrived from Metzers today. Male and female. Chuck is great. Sarah is not. Both eyes are swollen and gooey when I opened the box. Metzers and I are both in same state. They shipped yesterday and I always get my shipment the next day (I always specify gro gel). I don't normally do this but gave them a bath because neither one of the would drink from the bowl. They just really looked confused by the food and water. So I ran them a shallow warm bath (it's 90+ outside and I have my temp set to 82 in my house) so that Sarah could clean off her face and rinse her nares out.

Chuck I saw was being a little aggressive with Sarah. She kept trying to snuggle him and he kept biting her neck and pulling out down. Not sure what that's about. I gently put my hand in the brooder to pet them both (trying to side track Chuck) and would move him a little from biting.

I hung out with them for 30 minutes showing them their mash (the starter moistened. i do it for a couple days then move to dry. worked great with my ducks.). Chuck preferred to eat out of my hand only at first but eventually started chowing from the dish. Sarah just kept wandering around chewing on straw. I couldn't get her eat or drink. (water has electrolyte/vitamin stuff in it) I kept grabbing the mash and letting it sprinkle from my hand and eventually the movement coupled with Chuck chowing caught her attention and she joined him in the feast. I also finalllly got her to drink water by making my fingers 'splash' it a bit.

Should I give Sarah a day before putting the antibiotic drops in her eyes? (vetramycin is what I have sp?)

I will attach some pics here shortly.

****Added pics in post #3. Poor Sarah. She'd be so pretty except for her poor eyes. I hope the drops and baths clear it up.

Sounds like he was aggresive in travel. Baths are a good thing right from the first day as long as supervised. Rinsing with plain water and adding drops or ointment will only help her eye feel better sooner. Geese unlike ducks need grass and dark greens right from the beginning to keep them happy and healthy. Be it with you in the yard or offered I the brooder. We put all of our songs in playpens at 3-5 days old all day with water. They return to their brooders at night.

This is Sarah. Her eye is not squinty like that. It was the flash. Poor thing.

This one is Chuck. He's a very active fella. Louder than Sarah too.

I went ahead and put the drops in here eyes. I will give them another bath tonight so she can clean up some more.
Thanks so much!

She looks really good, looks to be shipping stress and him being a bully. That will get better with more space. Geese are natural nibblers so don't be surprised of they chew on each others backs and or wings from time to time.

She is not as spunky and alert as Chuck is. I hope she is ok. She is eating and drinking fine now though. She sure loves Chuck. If she could climb on top of him and lay on top of him- she would. She mashes herself into him to sleep lol. Chuck acts like he is just barely tolerating her love. haha

I don't think they are going to live through the night. :( The female is sounding really really crackly, her eyes are worse and she sometimes shakes her head and bubbles and spit fly out of her mouth- almost like vomit. Now the male is also acting funny. :( This is so awful. I am calling Metzers in the morning. There is no way this is from me. I feel SO awful for these baby geese. I am just about in tears.

I had to leave a message at Metzers. They are both still alive. They have clear fluid coming out of their nostrils. Sarah's eyes actually look slightly better today. The drops didn't seem to be doing anything and they became really swollen and dry- one cracked and started bleeding (the area around the eye) so I actually put neosporin on her eyes (regular not the pain reliever kind). I did that around 11pm, 2am and then just now. Her eyes look significantly improved. I can hear them breathing and the liquid coming out of their nares is so stressful. I am not only concerned for them- but the rest of my flock. If this is something they can 'carry' even after they are no longer sick- I would hate for my 14 ducks to be exposed. 8 of my ducks (8 weeks old now) came from Metzers and were/are healthy as can be though. I am offering the goslings fresh water, dry crumb starter now and fresh organic wheat grass clippings. Although they are not interested in the greens.

I think that is all I can do right now...

On phone with Metzers. This is not going well at all. The lady tried to tell me I caused this by letting Sarah sit in a couple inches of warm water to wash her face and clean her nares. She was doing this before- she was unhealthy BEFORE. And because they aren't dead, she said what do you want us to do? They only replace within the first 24 hours. So I have to hope they die in 24 hours instead of 48 so I can be helped? I was up most of the night stressing out. I even got to speak with John Metzer- he said to keep them warm, dry, food, water etc and maybe put some antibiotics in their water. I didn't expect him to diagnose them but there is no way I caused a respiratory infection with hours of having them. I don't even know what to do. I am sad and tired and frustrated right now.

Is it me or does she look better today? She is also talking to me today. Running around and being active. She was not doing that yesterday. The neosporin seems to have worked better on her eyes than the antibiotic drops. Go Figure. Chuck still sounds funny.
