What do you feed your baby chicks during their time in the brooder (from hatching to around 8 weeks)? Brand names and types would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Thank you!! I googled "DuMor" and found it is 24% protein and most all the others I looked at were only 18-20% It doesn't say medicated but it says it has Coccidiosis Prevention -so I am assuming I was wrong, and medicated doesn't necessarily mean "medicine". I guess it just kills off the Cocci??

24% protein seems awfully nice!!

Thank you again!

It does not "kill" cocci. Like all medicated starter with amprolium, it merely blocks the cocci, allowing the chick's immune system to develop and not be overwhelmed. The use of the term medicated is confusing, perhaps, but it is really more prophylactic in nature.

Pretty sure more TSC's also sell a starter by DuMor that is also around 20% protein. They also sell Purina as well.

Every bag of feed has a label sewn into the seam. That label discloses the protein content as well as what medications (if any) were added. Amprolium is most commonly used and it's a coccidistat (blocks nutrients needed by the cocci). A second, blue label is used if the feed contains BMD (an antibiotic).

So, my advice is to not just look for the words "medicated chick starter" -- check the label in the seam and know exactly what you're getting.
