Sick Hen Help!!!

I have a black maran hen that has been sick for 2+ months. I have lost 4 other young chickens to the same symptoms. They were in seperate runs from her. She is lethargic sleepy with her eyes closed. She moves very slowly and sleeps everywhere. I seperated her and gave her electrolytes in her water. I have wormed all of my flock (27). I did find a small amount of mold in one corner of the nesting box in her coop from water leaking in. I have taken care of that. She is a young hen from this springs hatch. The others that I lost were also young. She started acting better when I wormed her and now she has one eye open but the other is watery and half opened hald closed all of the time. She is eating and drinking just not much. Today I noticed that she had layer crumbles stuck around her nostrils so she is now got clear fluid coming from her nose. I am at a lost as to what I can do for her. I lost 2 cochins from a June hatch 2 weeks ago. They were fine one day and the next they were in the run dead. That is when I found the mold. Should I give her antibiotics? I do not have a vet in the area for chickens. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Is there an odor present? You may want to read some articles on Coryza to see if that is possibly the issue you are facing. I'm not saying it is, but it is worth reading about to see if your symptoms are the same. It's the first thing that came to mind when I read your post, but I have never experienced it firsthand (thank the Lord) so I'm not sure.

Hi, generally nostril discharge probably means such diseases:
Bacterial - chronic respiratory disease

Bacterial - Infectious coryza
Mycoplasma - Mycoplasma infection
viral - infectious bronchitis(IB)
viral - influenza

It seems very like coryza or Mycoplasma, as my best guess.
Maybe you can do some research on them.Good luck!

No odor.No scratching, weezing, hard time breathing, sneezing. She looks good and healthy except for this eye thing. I purchased this hen as a week old chick from the breeder. The 3 other birds I had that died were in different runs/coops and came from different places. None of them were kept together. I have 7 seperate coops/runs that I keep all my breeds seperate in. All 4 of the chickens were different breeds. Two of them came from a hatchery. They were born June 1 this year and were healthy as could be and then the next morning they were side by side dead in the run. She is the only maran of a flock of 3 that is sick. It's weird because the other birds were fine one day and dead the next. She has been like this for a couple months. One side of her head looks perfectly normal, clear eye wide open comb is red. On the other side eye looks like it has a film on it, half open skin looks like it has pulled away from the eye and the skin is a pale color. She is eating, drinking comes in and out of the coop with the other chickens. Should I possibly try an antibiotic? I have no idea what to get or how much. The electrolytes did perk her up some when I put it in her water. I am just at a loss.

I would give them 1cc of penicillin mixed in same syringe with tylan 50 1/2cc. for large chicken, decrease dosage smaller the bird, make sure and get extra air in it and mix medication well. Tylan can be destructive to tissue alone and doesn't seem to be as destructive like this. I give it injection under skin on breast. I would then put 3cc of tylan 50 injectable in 1 gallon of water. I would minumum give it in water 5 days and 3 injections to real sick birds also every other day. Not so sick ones may only need 1 or 2 shots not all three. I would take either terramycin eye ointment or if you don't have that would use triple antibiotic ointment with no pain reducing medication added. That pain medication in it kills poultry. You need just plain neomycin or triple antibiotic ointment and apply to eye and nasal areas. Make sure you don't occlude the nares. The only difference between eye medication and triple antibiotic ointment is packaging and sterility. I would also get a tube to tube feed them if they are not eating well. I get what is called lamb saver tube at KVVet supply or valley vet online. I also order penicillin there and tylan 50. You can go to tractor supply or atwoods and get it too. There is picture of tube set up. I push the tube in back of chickens mouth that isn't eating not forcing it and push it down their throat and down and down you can feel it in their neck till it is in there crop. I give big chicken 60cc med 40cc small 10cc ensure plus, baby formula, milk and egg mixed up. something to give nutrients to your bird and energy

If the bird is laying over sick I would wrap it in towel and bring it in box in house. Real sick birds cannot maintain their heat in their body so tend to get cold and die of hypothermia. Respiratory infections like this are spread by contact (you touch sick bird then touch well bird or contact with surface bacteria on) or by mites. Wash your hands in between birds or use hand sanitizer. Mites bite sick bird then bite well bird and spit out germs in well bird making them sick! So put seven dust on your birds or adams flea spray on them to reduce mites.
When I didn't have tube i soaked bread in ensure plus or milk with raw egg added and took piece of bread put towards back of non eating chickens throat so they couldn't spit it out and got them to swallow it. It will give them some strength to get well.

I am sure this will help you. Let us know how they are. I would clean out coops too if old litter in them for mites to live in and take spray bottle with 1/4 strength chlorox water and spray about on wood to kill bacteria too.

Is there any kind that I can do orally? I have penicillin that is for horses. Can I use it?

This hen is acting fine except for this eye being watery and half opened. She is eating and drinking fine and also moving around normal (except she is like in slow motion). I clean all of my coops and pens out weekly and replace all the bedding. I use pine wood chips for bedding in the coops. They are on dirt in their runs. They have hanging feeders and hanging waterers. I replace the water every other day and I clean them with soap and water weekly.

absolutely you can use it. Injections work best. You can give tylan 50 orally 1/2cc for big chicken but jsut isn't the same as injection. Penicillin and tylan 50 work best. If you get pen losing chickens i always add tylan 50 to 1 gallon of water for 5 days it is wonderful stuff and no more sickness.
