Cyst on cheek?

I noticed a few days ago that this GL Cochin hen had some swelling on her cheek but otherwise seemed ok, so I decided to watch her for a few more days to see if it would go away on its own. It didn't, so today I decided to see if I could drain it. However, when I was cleaning it up I noticed that it was hard and attached feeling, not just fluid like I had expected. It also is weeping at the top but I am not sure if the other chickens didn't do that. Anyway, I have isolated her, started her on a broad spectrum antibiotic and applied a topical antibiotic to the area itself. Any idea what this is and what can be done about it? There isn't a chicken vet anywhere around so I would appreciate any advice etc.on where to go from here.

Thank you for your reply! I attempted to lance the area yesterday afternoon, but after making a small incision, I couldn't really tell much about the mass itself and it was starting to bleed more than I liked, so I stopped at that point. Today, I decided to call every vet in the phone book and I finally found one that would treat her. She said she thought the mass was a cyst and she was going to try and remove it this afternoon. She said the anesthesia is pretty rough on them, but we really don't have a choice. Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted.

I lance them without anesthesia or a local. Yes, they do feel it, but it's better that letting the infection spread. I would probably use a local if i had some and new that it was safe to use on them. I'm glad you have the resources to have it dealt with by a professional. Keep us posted!
