The Story

Within the lush evergreen forests of Washington state lurks a small town known as Cliffside. A population of around 10,000 two-legs inhabit it, many owning a good portion of land. In the year of 1954, a farmer in the area made chickens a popular pet for many Cliffside area residents. He raised a large assortment of breeds, and sold the chicks off to those willing to raise them. A few others in the area took his stock or their own stock and did the same thing. By 1979, nearly everyone had chickens in their yards. Eventually, there became such a large number of these birds that their owners either set them loose into the wilderness because they could no longer provide proper care, or the birds were allowed to wander so far that they managed to escape. In 1987, so many had complained about their neighbor's chickens, whether they actually owned a flock or not, that there became a law making it so there could only be a limit of four chickens per yard. After this, many kept a small number of their favorite chickens and set the rest loose into the forest.

Reversing back to 1955, a large wildfire ravaged the Cliffside area, allowing chickens to escape after their owners released them or when their coops were burnt. Those who managed to survive the blaze met up in what now is AshClan territory, claiming they had risen from the ashes of such a fire and establishing what today is the most populated and well respected clan. Gradually, other clans were formed, some from disputes and others from foreign birds. The bloodlines of the first birds still exist to this day.

➺ Rules

➺ All BYC rules apply
➺ Be realistic. No magic, no godmodding, a chicken cannot kill the humans, injuries do not heal overnight, a clan of 20 cannot be defeated by one measly bird, etc.
➺ Do not control characters or clans other than your own.
➺ When fighting, you may only deal one blow per post. Evading is not allowed unless the blow was indirect.
➺ Proper grammar is required. It is difficult to understand you if you're using text talk, and it defeats the purpose of creativity in an RP if your posts are bland and smacked together.
➺ Mary-Sues/Gary-Stus (flawless, boring characters) are not permitted. I will ask you to redo your character if he/she is one of these.
➺ Keep things PG-13 at the most. Gore is okay so long as it makes sense for the situation, just don't go into detail if your character(s) are, cough cough, having 'relations'.

➺ General Antics

The alpha may be of either gender, and are usually considered one of the strongest or the strongest of the clan. They decide what to do with their clan, and normally stick around with those who belong to the upper rankings of their group. Those who are lower down in the pecking order normally fear the leader in some sort of way, although some have been known to challenge the alpha. The alpha always gets his or her food first, and those who eat his or her food or begin to eat before they do are deeply frowned upon, and occasionally attacked. The alpha (if female) and those who are upper class are usually the only ones within the clan who are allowed to hatch chicks. Those who are in different categories of the pecking order usually have to leave the territory if they become broody, and usually aren't allowed back into the clan. During early spring, however, anyone is allowed to brood. Whether the leader is male or female, there normally is only one to three roosters in an entire flock, although some have been known to have none at all. Many roosters remain alone, harassing or stealing hens for the remainder of their lives. During springtime, one must be weary of roosters, as this is the season when they often come out to steal or breed with hens, or even take entire clans for themselves. Borders between territories are marked by scent, and much care must be taken when passing through them. Birds can be held hostage or even killed, which can lead to border disputes. There is also a naming tradition among the clans. Chickens are not named 'Sunny' or 'Omelet', but rather 'OrchidHeart' or 'SickleBeak'. Names are often used to describe their appearance or personality. If a chicken is joining a clan for the first time and they have a name such as 'Poppy', the Alpha will assign them with a new name that they think suits them. Leaders have the suffix -'star' in their names according to StarClan (more on this) tradition, while chicks have -'chick' and apprentices have -'claw'. After a chicken graduates apprentice-hood, the leader assigns the suffix. The prefix is always chosen by the medicine chicken after consulting with StarClan.

➺ Occupations

Fascinatingly enough, birds of different ranks may have jobs to do in order to insure the clan's economy does not freeze. The alpha, of course, leads the clan, and the middle class chickens have the choice of being a warrior, a tree guard (more agile birds used as spies and guards; sometimes deployed as warriors during wartime, however), a hunter/gatherer, or a nanny for orphaned chicks. Those who are of the lower class do the dirty work. They build for the clan, bring messages to other clans, are used as pack carriers during journeys, do cleaning, can be used as servants, etc. Upper class birds live an easy life, and usually do not have a formal occupation other than politics. Medicine birds have a very different task, however. There is one per clan and they go through extensive training to keep their birds healthy and free of disease. They may have one apprentice, who will take their place a year after they graduate or if their mentor dies, and cannot have mates. Medicine chickens and their apprentices go to the moonpool, a sacred meeting place, every half-moon. Once retired, they are given very special treatment.

➺ The Clan Code

This applies to all clans. If a clan breaks the code, they become a pariah and are not allowed to join meetings or go to the marketplace once they perfect and publicly apologize for their mistake.

  • Newly appointed warriors will keep a silent vigil for one night after receiving their warrior name.
  • A chick must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice.
  • Prey is killed only to be eaten. Give thanks to StarClan for its life.
  • The leader, retirees, and those with chicks must be fed before apprentices and warriors/tree guards. Unless they have permission, apprentices may not eat until they have hunted to feed the retirees. If any warrior or apprentice is sick or injured, they may eat after the leader, retirees, and mothers but before the others.
  • Do not hunt or trespass on another clan's territory unless a truce is made between the two and the leaders permit it.
  • Defend your clan, even with your life. You may have friendships with birds from other clans (save for wartime), but your loyalty must remain to your clan, as one day you may meet them in battle.
  • The highest of the upper ranking birds will become clan alpha dies, retires, or is exiled. An exception to this is if the to-be alpha is challenged.
  • After the death or retirement of the second in command (highest ranking bird in upper class), the new second in command must be chosen before moonhigh.
  • A gathering of all four clans is held at the full moon during a truce that lasts for the night. There shall be no fighting among clans at this time.
  • Boundaries must be checked and marked daily. Challenge all trespassing birds.
  • No warrior/tree guard can neglect a chick in pain or danger, even if the chick is from a different clan.
  • The word of the clan alpha is law.
  • An honorable warrior/tree guard does not need to kill other chickens to win his/her battles, unless they are outside the warrior code or if it is necessary for self-defense.
  • A clan bird rejects the soft life of a domestic animal.

➺ StarClan

StarClan are the deceased ancestors, descendants and clanmates of the clan birds. Chickens are only allowed to join StarClan when they die if they have lived an honorable life and followed the clan code. StarClan birds don't have to be in a clan at the time of their death to be welcomed to StarClan. When a clan chicken dies, they will be guided to StarClan by a deceased bird who played an important part in their life, such as a mentor or a cherished family member. When a bird dies and goes to join StarClan, they merely close their eyes and reopen them. When a leader loses a life, that life appears in StarClan as a very faint copy of the leader, but they are unable to communicate in any way to other StarClan until the leader loses their final life. StarClan chickens leave starry claw prints, their eyes shine like stars, and their quills glow with a strange light, which makes them look like they have stars in their feathers. Frost sparkles at their feet and glitters in their eyes. Their plumage shines like ice and carries all the scents of the seasons: the tang of leaf-bare, the green scent of newleaf, the musk of leaf-fall, and the sweet blossom of greenleaf. The birds' spirits remain in StarClan until they are forgotten by all living and dead birds over a long time and earned their own peace, causing them to fade away to little more than ghost-like images of themselves. It is possible for a StarClan chicken to be killed again, but they vanish forever; going to a different place.

➺ AshClan

The oldest and most populated clan in the area. The birds are typically very brave and have a deep respect for their clan, some boasting they are the best in the area. Their territory consists of rich, flame enhanced soil and thriving wildlife, their diet consisting of a variety of small animals and fresh vegetation, allowing for proper nutrition and very healthy birds. The camp in which the chickens live in is in the heart of their territory in a small, natural clearing, so the moon can watch directly above them while they rest. In the middle of the clearing is a hollow apple tree belonging to the alpha, a burrow underneath it where their quarters are that extend up through what little is left of the tree. Throughout the camp is a load of undergrowth that disguise its inhabitants from possible predators, beneath it more burrows that hold the dens of the upper class, warriors, tree guards, lower class, middle class, medics, and the nursery.

➺ MistClan

Named for the mist that flows down into the lowlands of this territory, MistClan is often referred to as a mysterious territory. Its inhabitants are often more weary, and have shown some violence and shed blood in the past. It is more strict than most clans, therefore explaining why there are so many exiles of the place. Very little is known about MistClan's history, as they are the newest out of all clans and are very difficult to gather information on due to tighter-than-average security.

➺ RainClan

An interesting clan. While they follow the same rules as all of the others, they follow a different denomination of beliefs. They believe in StarClan, but along with that they believe that the sun and moon are ancient deities who created the first birds on earth. In addition to having all other ranks that clans typically have, birds are given the choice of becoming monks or nuns who devote their lives to religion, not to mention the ranks are even more rigorously religious than a regular clan would have them be. They have even gone as far as reserving certain food items, such as mice and blackberries, for religious celebrations only, and going neutral rather than taking sides.
➺ TimberClan

This upbeat clan features a unique territory, the camp being up in the trees rather than on the ground. The population consists of small, agile bantams who are trained carefully how to become skilled flyers. They are renowned for their hospitality and generous nature, supplying surplus food and space for refugees and anyone in need during times of struggle. Most who do not work as world-class tree guards often sell small items at the marketplace during the day, and might not even have a residence upon TimberClan territory.
➺ Clanless Birds

Just as it sounds; any bird without a clan. Not all are to be trusted.
➺ The Marketplace

A city-like environment that serves as a marketplace and neutral meeting place for chickens of all clans. Fighting is not allowed here, as the grounds are considered to be a sacred shrine of StarClan. The area is open everyday of the week, unless it's a full moon day. On full moon days, all clans of the area meet up to discuss current events and to remember those who belong to StarClan. It is also to be noted that each clan's leader picks out one warrior who they deem is worthy enough to defend the land, and send them to be peacekeepers at the shrine during the day. Occasionally, there will be switch offs. Within the shrine is an extinct volcano vent that opened up and became much like a tunnel. Conveniently, it leads towards the west by the ocean, where a few more clans reside. Sometimes chickens will use these paths as a trading path.

The final topics, as you can see, are still in progress. I'm currently working on them; I just wanted to give a little preview here.
