Had 7 Plymouth Rock Eggs, We are at day 22. One hatched yesterday morning, one hatched yetserday afternoon. We need to help one hatch this afternoon. It zippedbut ouldn't break the shell apart. This one seems weak and stands up but not for long. It then lies down for a bit and does this over again. It peeps really loud. Is this normal for a difficult hatch? First two are running around like crazy. The other 4 eggs were wiggling 2 days ago (day 20) adnow no pipping, no nothing. How long do I leave them? Is itnormal to have such a difference in hatch timing with the same bunch of eggs?

I am in the same boat sort of, we had healthy hatchers, yesterday but there are 20 eggs still in the bator. how do we check them ? I don't want to kill any but I dont want them killing me with the smell of a dead eggs. Let me know if you find an answer. good luck.

New Chick Care Links and Info

DIP THE BEAK OF THE CHICK IN THE WATER BEFORE YOU TURN IT LOOSE in the brooder. A taste of water right away helps them to find more water soon. If your chicks are at all stressed, add about 3 tablespoons of brown or table sugar to each quart of water for extra energy. Most baby bird loss is caused because the bird doesn't start to eat or drink. Never let your bird run out of water. http://odysseyranch.com/Chick Care Tips.html

Homemade Electrolyte Recipe for weak/ill chicks
2 C. Water
2 TBL. Brown Sugar, honey or molasses
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
Mix until all dry ingredients dissolve & Keep refrigerated
You could also use electrolyte drinks Gatorade or Pedialyte, or
3 drops of POLYVISOL (liquid childrens A-B-D vitamins)
Slowly drip along inner edge of lower beak.

Some causes of EARLY CHICK MORTALITY ~

I did dip it's beak in sugar water and the others are cuddling with him. His chirps are really loud and sound strong.

is his butt/vent clear? no poo build up? smell him, does he stink? sometimes infection can stink this is why I ask u to smell him/her.

I totally understand, its nerve racking and not for everyone to assist. It can be heartbreaking,

but you can read and read and get more comfortable the more you read, watch the assist videos too, that way you can get in your head what your looking at. and if not, then at least candle, tap and listen for sounds movements, if they are moving and no internal pip just put them back and wait. and then its up to you to decide if you want to help with the other situations I listed in the article.

What was your humidity? Did you open it after they pipped the shell? Is your chick fluffed out or does it look like the fluff is stuck to it? If there are not external pips candle and gently tap with your nails and see if it moves or chirps. Sorry for all the questions.

I think you need to candle. That may answer all of your questions. If you see a distinct black shape or shadow in the air cell then you know it's pipped internally. Then determine if it's alive from there. You're not going to hurt it by candling. I waited too long to assist after I could clearly see the beak in the air cell, and lost the chick.

No poopy butt. He seems to be getting a bit stronger but it sure is slow progress. He is nice and fluffy. Didn't sniff him Sally

. As for the eggs I candelled and cannot see any movement or anything in the air sac. No noise. Did the float test and the small end touched bottom with large end up. I am assuming they have died. So sad they were all wiggling two days ago. Temp and humidity were all constant.
