This is my favorite chicken!! Her name is Mama, and out of 11 supposed Light Brahmas, she's the oddball and easy to tell apart from the others. Only 3 have names because of it. The pullets are now 6 1/2 months old and laying really well so far. Mama got frostbite this winter and has lost a few of her toes on both feet, but she still roosts, waddles and gets around fine w/ the other girls.

Her head almost looks like a turkey, she's very light in the comb, wattles and beak compared to the others and the colored feathers at the base of her neck extend farther down whereas the others come to an abrupt halt at the base of her neck. She's also much lighter (body wise) and less fluffy and lacking in the tail department. Poor girl. But I love her whatever she is.

This is a picture from today.

And here's what her sisters look like, also taken today. Huge difference between them I think. She must be a LB mix or something???

Any and all ideas are welcome. Thanks!

L.

I'm no pro at chickens, but my sister had a flock of light Brahmas I helped her start and looks like to me you have a Daddy instead of a mama!! Looks to be a rooster. The rooster I got my sister is tall and lean like that and having a pea comb it's harder to tell at that young age a rooster from a hen. Hope someone else that knows a little more can help. Very pretty birds!

x 2. I think I can see saddle feathers. Time will tell but if he is the only boy he should start crowing any day now. If he is around an alpha roo her may never crow.

Thanks for the responses and compliment. They are very pretty and great entertainment. Maybe she's just an oddball LB, or maybe her sisters are? She's definitely a girl, as she's laying eggs. The cockerel's in my avatar and he's the only boy, thankfully.

So you seen her lay an egg?

toshi - Yes, I've seen her lay a couple eggs, actually, not just one. She's a morning kinda gal and likes her privacy. She comes back in after everyone goes out for free range time to do her duty.

SD - haha. My girl doesn't look like the other girls, but Bob seems to like her as well as he does the others.

I've seen her get after him if she's not in the mood.
