Somewhere in California
I've been a lurker on this site for some time. Da wife has wanted chickens for a while now, finally we got 5 Rhode Island Reds as chicks.

As they were getting too big for the box we had them in we started to build a coop. My inspiration was the Fivehens thread:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/fivehens-awesome-coop-construction-page

I've modified it as we live in California and the summers get pretty hot. It's still a work in progress. I've made a hole in one side for the nest box and the sides are 48"x44". Just covered the hole with 1" square hardware cloth.

We're thinking of having the whole yard as their run. We have neighbors that let their chickens loose and they just wander with no problems having to keep them away from predators during the day.

Any way, any and all comments appreciated, as I'm a guy that grew up in NYC, so like I know chickens!

! Happy you joined us! Good luck to you and your flock!

Thanks all. I made a feeder today as we were just using a pan with the chick food. Alas, they're slobs. I thought they had more class, but they must have went through half the food in the container, which is more than they normal would go through.

I'll be reading some more posts on this site to remedy their culinary habits.

Hi and :welcome

Your coop looks awesome. You're doing a fine job! There's no saying city people can't do great with chickens. A lot of families in our suburb have a little backyard flock now.
