Well it's been a while since I've posted anything and I've had lots of ups but mainly downs since then - too many to list.

All my girls are over 3.5 years and ex battery hens. I had nine and I've lost three over the last few months. I had to have the most recent one put to sleep last Saturday, she had gone blind over a few days starting from the Wednesday. From reading other posts I was hoping she would learn to live with it but on Saturday morning she appeared to be losing her balance too so I thought it wasn't fair to keep her going. Some of the girls had coccidiosis about 6 weeks back and had been treated with antibiotics but she never seemed to get it and seemed fine and healthy until she suddenly lost her sight.

Another girl became paralysed about 4 weeks ago but by syringing vitamin B and antibiotics into her daily I now have her back to strength and still can't believe she got better. I kept her in the house and nursed her on the hour but now she's back with the others.

I was working this afternoon, before leaving I put the girls in their pen. One of them, Georgina who was treated for coccidiosis was in great form and was looking for somewhere to lay an egg (none of them have laid an egg for a long time) so I was hoping she was finally back to full health. When I got back from work this evening my partner had let the girls out and I noticed Georgina was just sitting on the drive. When I went up to her she "spoke" to me as usual but then I realised that she too had gone blind. I am at my wits end - how could this have happened so quickly?

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this blindness? As battery hens they would have been vaccinated against Marek's disease but could the vaccine have worn off now that they are older? Both Georgina and the hen that died last week had no obvious signs and their eyes didn't look any different to the other hens. The vet said that the hen that I've nursed back couldn't have had Marek's disease as you can't reverse it and it's a virus so antibiotics wouldn't have worked on it.

Maybe I shouldn't be linking the two blind birds with the temporarily paralysed girl?

I would really appreciate any help or suggestions that anyone can give.

How do know she has gone blind,it is possible she has cataracts. I believe Avain Encephalomyelitis(AE) is a major cause of cataracts in chickens, not sure if this has anything to do with her being a battery hen.

Many thanks for replying - I know she is blind because you can bring your hand rapidly up to either eye and she doesn't flinch and when she walked (gingerly) across our yard she walked into a low border wall at the flower bed as she did not see it. I don't believe it is cataracts as her eyes are completely clear and she went blind in the space of 5 hours between me going to work and coming home. And this is the second hen it has happened to in less than a week.

It is very warm in the UK at the moment - could the heat have anything to do with it?

No,the heat should not have caused this. There are several diseases that will cause blindness in chickens one i mentioned in previous post,Lymphoia Leukosis, and Avian Pox are another. Possible it could be a result of something genetic,or a vitamin deficiency. Try giving vitamins see if there is an improvement. There are several threads on chickens going blind, type in blind chickens on forum heading, you will find different posts regarding this.

I don't have a definite answer, but you said battery hens? We don't know all that goes on in those he||-holes, but we do know it's awful, and the chicks are probably inbred and not bred to live longer than enough to produce a ton of eggs.

It's very possible that's where all of these problems are coming from.

Thanks again for your replies.

I have searched all the forums for help already. They are out of the battery cages for nearly two years and free range and have a varied diet. Her eyes look absolutely perfect - no discharge or swelling or cloudiness - I am so mystified by this, I put the other hen's blindness down to old age but to have a second hen with exactly the same condition in less than a week? I have searched the internet high and low to no avail. I will take her to the vet in the morning but I usually end up telling him more than he tells me so I'm not expecting a straight answer from him. I am baffled.

Marek's paralyzes chickens and can cause blindness. It will often infect a whole flock. I'm guessing your chickens weren't vaccinated by the hatchery, and it doesn't work very well on adult chickens.

Just to give you an update. The vet thinks there may be lesions on Georgina’s brain caused by coccidiosis. Georgina cannot see but her eyes respond to light indicating something neurological. We have her on Trimacare antibiotics to see if that helps. The vet did not know a lot about chickens but she has a vet friend who has worked a lot with poultry and she is going to pick her brains and get back to me Monday.

I will keep you all posted and still welcome any advice or suggestions.

Thank you both for your replies. We gave Georgina her antibiotics yesterday and she was still walking about and eating. This morning she is ten times worse - like she's in a trance. She's in worse condition that my girl that I had put to sleep last week but it's Sunday so the vets are not open. She feels very hot - I'm wondering should I try cooling her down? I honestly feel she's past any help but can't give up either. Has anyone any suggestions?

She now is having fits and spasms - I know there is no hope for her but does anyone know what this could have been, as i have another 5 hens who seem poorly today. I cannot understand how she seemed fit healthy and happy at 12.30 pm Friday, in 5 hours she became blind, 24 hours later she was still getting around, was alert and eating and now less than 24 hours later she's having some sort of brain seizure. Has anyone experienced this?
