I was gone this morning, before I left, I watered and checked the chicks. All was perfectly fine. I came home, and the manager had been nailing tar paper to their coop, with them IN IT. I noticed a few spots of diahrea, so kept checking them, through the rest of the day. Went out with their water, at about 6:30 pm and they ALL had bad diahrea, they had not eaten much, if any at all today, had not drank any water that I could tell, and were stressed, bad...I literally flew to TSCtonight and bought corrid, an all purpose antibiotic and some save a chick and probiotics. By the time I got back, I got ahold of the manager he helped me get the chicks into their old brooder box, and I came in to find out how much corrid to use and make it for the chicks, went out and he was no where to be found.

By the time I managed to get all the chicks back in a clean coop, it was horrid, smelled horrid, it was too dark and I can NOT get them to drink. While I was trying to get the manager to come back and help me, he never did come back, I tried to get them to drink some of the corrid water but they again, were too stressed.

What do I do now? I'ts pitch dark out. They are huddled in their sleeping corner. They are not going to drink the water tonight. I also need to know how much of the Duramycin-10, each pound contains 25 grams is what the package says, but and is for cows, swine and poultry. It doesn't say how much to give the chicks, They are 6 weeks tomorrow, if they make it through the night and there are 15 of them. BR's.

Also, should I try putting save a chick in with the corrid in hopes they DO make it through the night and will drink in the am? I will be out there at 5:30 am, as that is what time they are getting up now...maybe I won't lose them all? One chick was all ruffled and this time it was NOT heat related!!!

Thanks so much for any answers!!!!

Okay, calm down a bit. Tar paper has an awful smell and may have something to do with this. Do they have airflow in their coop?

Now, Duramycin-10 is given at 1/2 tbls. per gallon of water. Corid, the 20% powder, is given at 1/2 to 3/4 tsp. per gallon. Don't give the vitamins to them while giving Corid.

Oh by the way, I got the 20% powder corrid package. I was in such a rush to get this done before dark am not sure I read it right on here. I put two tablespoons in a gallon. Is that right? or too much, I could only find one link on here quickly...and am not sure if I read it right....if I am wrong, I need to go get their water container and change it...thanks!!!

You really can't mix medications in water. First you need to decide what you are treating. Coccidiosis is common in chicks between 3-6 weeks old. Older ones can get it. They may have had diarrhea because they drank a lot of water. Most times there is blood in poop, but not always. Corid should be given for 5 days, nothing else in water, changed daily. Duramycin dosage is 1/2 TB in 1 gallon water--nothing else added. You should not give these together--you either need to treat for cocci or an infection. Do they have other symptoms than being puffed up or diarrhea? I would treat for cocci, then after it is completed give vitamins and probiotics for gut health.

What color is their poop? A question...why was the manager putting tar paper around their coop? They could be stressed from the banging and to be honest, I would give them the Sav-A-Chick before you do anything. Try and go out with a flashlight and see if you can get them calm enough to at least take a drink, even if you have to pick them up and dip their beaks. If you stay calm, they will calm down and feel safe. Check in the morning and evaluate then whether or not they need the Corid. It just seems very sudden for cocci to show up and no symptoms before this.

Yes they have air flow, but I did close their windows for the night, the coop is not sealed up with no siding on yet so has lots of air leaks, should I open their windows back up and take the tar paper off? It's going to be 53 degrees tonight and I usually shut their windows at night time as there is all that top part that has small gaps everywhere. He was supposed to do the run, before working on the coop AT ALL...so they could be outside...and not freaked out over all the pounding and such, apparently he had the chain saw going right outside the coop too. I could strangle him!!!! I TOLD him to wait till I got back!!!! He has NO CLUE!!! Thanks for the info on the Duramycin too, much appreciated!!! I will be right back, need to get the water and change it. thanks for that too,...I JUST tooke them off the medicated feed a little less than a week ago also. So no sav a chick also and no, the probiotics was for after they had the run of meds to help them get back to normal flora in their intiestines but thanks for the reminder!!! BRB

Leave the window closed if it isn't covered and safe. If there are spaces between the boards, the air will get through. Check the birds well, are they gasping? Are they settled in quietly now?

Just he dieahrea, didn't eat today and not much water if any and one fludffed up, be right back, I just put both meds in their water, not that they will get up to drink it, now that it is dark, I will just go get it and wait till we finish talking thanks!

ok I am back, I just remembered, one of the chicks, my top girl, and biggest, was laying down and is usually in the pack that runs to meet me. I did check her and she got up and seemed ok, except for the diahrea.

So should I rip the tar paper off??? I did open the windows half way also...but not sure if I should leave them open all night, after midnight is when the temps will really drop and fast till dawn.

What do you all think? I was thinking cocci...stress, being off the medicated, I only feed one bag, then regular, like a kids immunizations.

What a bone head he is...GRRRRR
