Clavamox source!

I use Clavamox for my feral cats when I notice respiratory problems. My vet gives it to me and it is very cheap. I didn't know that it could be used on chickens.

When would a person want to use Clavamox for the chickens? What signs, symptoms?

Unless the bird was looking like it was going to die, I would use Clavamox instead of Baytril, but if it were on deaths door, it would be Baytril.

Watch those expiration dates on the Clavamox liquid suspension, I do believe that they have a very short shelf-life after being mixed. The Clavamox I use is in pill form, so it doesn't expire as quickly.

FWIW, I use Baytril 10% on my cats and it usually cures respiratory infections in 3-5 days. Just remember that cats should never have more than 5mg/kg (.05ml per 2.2 pounds) as it can cause blindness.

Disclaimer: I am not suggesting that anyone do this, I just wanted to share a new source for antibiotics.

You are right, they do have a very short shelf life. I may have to ask my vet for the pills next time.

I will remember the Baytril for my cats as well. Not sure that I can catch them 3 - 5 days in a row to give it to them. After 1 day of meds, they are ready to rip my eyes out.

My feral cats have to be treated by injection. If I tried pills I would have to treat myself for several days afterward. One funny thing about my barn cats is that they do line up for flea drops. My normal cats hate the smell of the drops. The feral cats recognize it for the relief it provides.
Ain't that the truth, lol.

A fellow BYC member mentioned where to find Clavamox (amoxicillin and clavulanate). This might interest those that don't always want to use Baytril, but still need something with good broad-spectrum coverage.

Do you know the dosage for Clavamox Kathy?

Hi Kathy,

I treated a hen for 6 days with Clavamox and can't seem to find any information on withdrawal times before eating her eggs. It has been 10 days since she has had it and she has layed 6 eggs in a row now. She didn't lay for the first few days after treatment. We have been tossing her eggs so far.

The vet I got the Clavamox from just said "oh, a week or so" and that was it. I'm not going back to him for several reasons, but he doesn't seem to put much thought into his chicken care.

Thank you for any insight.

Probably okay to eat them after two weeks, but don't quote me on that.
