New Duckling Owner...

Thanks everyone for all of the support! The trio was doing great when I left for work this morning.

My chicks seem have grown big girl feathers overnight and were sitting on the edge of the brooder and feeder this morning when I got up. They looked at me as if to say "Mornin!" I have to set up the big brooder in the garage tonight and get a move on with the coop and run construction. I have two play yards that are 18 sq. ft. each, one for chicks and one for ducks, so they'll have more room to grow into. I have no electricity at the coop so they'll have to be ready when I put them outside.

I have a duck question...how old do the ducklings need to be before I can give them a shallow water source for bathing alone? I have seen people suggest paint pans, which would be easy for them to get in and out of. I guess my main concern is warmth, I don't really have a way to keep the water warm.

If you let them in water before they are fully feathered (about six weeks) you will need to dry them and keep them warm so they don't catch a chill or pneumonia and die.

I would just give them a bath in the morning and when u get home, then dry them with a towel afterwards.

And yes miss Lydia I am working on getting more babies.. Welsh harlequins will be next... Just slowly convincing my dh lol he says "no" but with a giant grin.. Because even he can't deny the little bubbie ducks!!

I let the ducklings bathe in a cake pan the first few days, and yes, I dried them off with a dry washcloth at first. After a few days, they got a ride to the tub, and then back to a cleaned warm brooder. Anyone who did not immediately begin to preen got dried with the cloth. After a few days, everyone was preening.

I was so proud of them.
