The first Faverolle to hatch had really messed up toes. I put chicken sandals on her when she was about 18 hours old.
After that I started noticing she would lean to one side (left leg). I did the straight-leg and push on the tendon to try and see if she has a slipped tendon (right leg). For the life of me I cannot say for certain if it is slipped, if I have put it back, or what. I also had bound the 2 legs together as you would for splay leg at this point, to keep the 1 leg from going out to the side.
I made her a chick chair out of a yogurt cup on Sunday. Yesterday I noticed she had a welt on her right knee joint. I think that it may be from her struggling inside the chick chair and scraping it somehow? it's the only thing I can come up with. she does struggled in there, and with the yogurt cup being solid white, I cant see what is happening except at the bottom by the feet. maybe she pulled her legs up high enough to scrape against the lip of the cup? It's the only thing I can figure out! (removed the hobbles tying the legs together)
I cleaned it with iodine as soon as I discovered the injury, and AB ointment.
since then I have kept ab ointment on it and cleaned it again with peroxide. the iodine makes the wound look a lot worse (yellowish) so I wanted to clean the area up with the peroxide and get all the iodine off for a picture, I hope peroxide is ok to use on her.
she will not put weight on the leg with the injured knee. I am not sure at this point if it is just the external wound, or if it is also possibly a tendon as well. She will straighten the other leg but not the right leg.
I created a new bigger chick chair for her yesterday. there is nothing she can touch her legs on, and it's clear so I can see in.
hatched 2/7
sandals 2/8
chick chair 2/9 (at night time)
bigger chair 2/10
I also started doing little mini physical therapy session with her yesterday 2/10. this is primarily when I could tell when she would not put any weight on it. Now I am thinking that the PT isnt helping if she cannot bear weight. I have again tried to feel for a slipped tendon. can't decide if it's the tendon or the knee injury... what do you think?
I keep remembering also that she hatched first/early, and that too high temperatures can give them screwed up legs/feet, and am wondering if that is the case here. at least it could have been with the toes - but now there is a whole nother problem...
