Please help me chicken experts! My 14 week old buff orp woke up this morning wheezing. I brought her inside and examined her. Here are the symptoms: Crusty beak, puffiness, mouth open, wheezing, crop lopsided and small, horrible breath, redness around her mouth. She walks and tries to peck. What do I do? I can't lose her!

Hi Sarah, I am so sorry about your baby. You might start with some antibiotics on her to treat the respiratory issue. Not sure if this is secondary to something else, but all you can treat is the symptoms at this point. Do you have any Duramycin? Most feed stores carry this medication. Some Tractor Supplies are not carrying antibiotics anymore. But most regular feed stores will carry this. Or you can get it on line. It is a good broad spectrum antibiotic and works well on respiratory ailments. If you can't find the Duramycin, Oxytetracycline will work too, but not as potent as the Duramycin. If you have hard water, and you will know because this stuff will turn purple in a couple hours, you will need to use distilled or RO water with the Duramycin, Hard water can render the meds weak to useless.

Don't let her free range on any stiff vegetation and keep her confined until you can figure out what is going on with her.

Keep us posted on your baby!!

Sarah, could she possibly have inhaled something that is trying to come up, hence the crusty beak and raspy breathing??

Thank you two crows! I called my mom and asked her to buy some Duramycin at the feed store. She is shopping today. Do I put it in the water?

Maybe. The other thing I've been thinking about is she has been eating feathers and long pieces of grass which I know is bad for their crop. I called my grandma, a chicken expert, and she said to give her some sugar in her water and separate her from the others. The good news is she pooped a white capped poop, so that's encouraging. So now she just stands with her eyes partly closed and she is puffed up. I felt her crop, which is like up to her chin, and it feels almost like a ring. When I try and massage it, she gasps and holds her beak open.

Thanks everyone for their encouragement!! It's most appreciated from this worried, crying girl!

Apple cider vinager is very good for everything!!!! It would probably help her alot. Just maybe 4 tablespoons per gallon of water. Hope it helps her!!!!
