We started our first flock on 6/21/14. We purchased 6 chicks from our local feed store (Red Barn in WPB - we love them). The chicks all hatched on 6/17/14 and it's really amazing how quickly they grow!
Since the chicks were so young when we got them and we did not know how to sex by wing feathers (learning so much here) we still do not know if we have girls or boys. For fun, we have a list of boy/girl names running on the fridge (let me know if you have any suggestions!).
Our 'flock' currently includes: 2 Black Australorps, 2 Gold Lace Wyandottes and 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks (those 2 are the most adventurous). We have a green Eglu Cube coop which is currently set up on our screened-in back porch functioning as a brooder. As soon as the little cheepers are big enough to be in the run we will relocate the Cube (with run then attached) out to a nice area we are clearing in the backyard.
I love Backyard Chickens! Great community, amazing learning resource and I am so thankful to our little flock for providing us the privilege of being a part of it!
