So, my wife and I were on a trip and she made a new friend. Unfortunately immigration wouldn't let her new friend come home with us.

Such a shame!

Here is her friend giving her a goodbye kiss:

Isn't she pretty?

Here's a friend that's a little less intimidating:

Cool pictures! Where did you go for vacation? We have what's known around here as Banana Spiders...they're about as large as your wife's friend but I've never got close enough to see the pattern on their back.

We were in Puerto Vallarta visiting a waterfall. They are basically the "golden orb-web spider" : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nephila_clavipes

The guide picked one up and was holding it, so that gave my wife the confidence she'd be fine. The wikipedia article says they can sometimes bite, but it's less painful than a bee-sting.

That link was interesting. And your spider is our banana spider! Guess I ought to take a closer look at the one stringing a web between a couple of our citrus trees to see what her abdomen looks like. That was amazing to read about the experimental use of their silk in surgery.

Wow, never know what new thing I'll learn on BYC next.

The thing I think is really cool about them is that their silk is actually yellow, though you have to be at just the right angle to see it. This one turned up in my husband's truck about this time last year; it had spun a web between the windshield and the steering wheel. Wonder what it was trying to catch?!!

Wow, that's pretty crazy!

When we're in Mexico, etc. and people see these they usually totally freak out. I can't even imagine how most people in the US that aren't familiar with them would feel if they found one right in front of their face in their car!!
